The BBC finds itself amidst controversy due to a documentary about the Israel-Gaza conflict, as it was narrated by the son of a high-ranking Hamas leader.
The company has taken down “Gaza: Surviving a Warzone” from its streaming platform BBC iPlayer to conduct more thorough investigations. This documentary follows the lives of four teenage boys amidst the conflict in Gaza, but controversy has arisen as one of the 13-year-old subjects, Abdullah Al-Yazouri, is revealed to be the son of Hamas’ deputy agriculture minister. Protesters supporting Israel are upset by this connection.
“The BBC has become a mouthpiece for terror. It cannot call terrorism by its name. The BBC has become a spokesperson for terrorists,” said Gideon Falter, the chief executive of the Campaign Against Antisemitism (CAA), which organized a demonstration outside the BBC headquarters in central London earlier this week. Photos from the event showed protestors holding up placards that read “spokespeople for terrorists.” Other signs showed Hamas militants with BBC headbands.
The Communications Authority of America (CAA) sent a request for information under the freedom of information act to the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), asking if any payments were made concerning the documentary and who received them, along with the amounts. The organization stated that this was an opportunity for the BBC to admit whether license fee funds had been given to Hamas. U.K. Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy discussed the matter with BBC director-general Tim Davie, assuring that no money paid would reach Hamas.
The BBC’s statement reads: “Gaza: Living Through a Warzone tells significant tales that need to be shared, specifically focusing on children in Gaza. However, concerns have been expressed about the program, so we are carrying out additional investigation with the production company. As such, the program will not be accessible on iPlayer during this process.
The corporation stated that they were not made aware of the teen’s familial link with the movie’s producers prior to the production.
After being taken off iPlayer, there is a growing demand from industry figures for the BBC to restore the program. Notable personalities like soccer star Gary Lineker, actors Riz Ahmed, Khalid Abdalla, Miriam Margolyes, and director Mike Leigh are among over 800 signatories of an open letter published by Artists for Palestine U.K. on Wednesday.
12 BBC team members, among them media professionals, penned a letter to Davie, also addressed to Samir Shah (chair of the board), Charlotte Moore (outgoing chief content officer), and Deborah Turness (head of news and current affairs).
Underneath the game of political maneuvering lies a group of children enduring the gravest hardships in their short lives,” the letter states. “It’s crucial that we keep their welfare as our primary focus during these debates. As content creators, we are deeply troubled by the involvement of politically biased actors in this matter, and how it may shape the future of media in this nation.
The letter additionally labeled the campaign as “racist” and “inhumane.” It urged the BBC to resist efforts aimed at having the documentary permanently taken down or subjected to excessive disclaimers.
As a devoted fan, I eagerly anticipate that the BBC’s board will deliberate over the upcoming movie this coming Thursday. However, The Hollywood Reporter has yet to receive a response from the BBC regarding their inquiry for comment.
