As a die-hard cinema enthusiast who has spent countless hours immersed in the magical world of animated films, I can confidently say that the return of Shrek and his pals is a moment I’ve been eagerly anticipating for years. With my memories of the original quartet still fresh in my mind, I find myself reminiscing about the laughter, the tears, and the sheer joy those movies brought to me as a child, and later as an adult.
Among Mike Myers‘ cherished characters, Shrek, the Scottish ogre, is arguably the one that resonates most with fans. Spanning four movies, audiences have shared laughter and emotions with Shrek, Donkey, and Fiona as they navigate the fairytale realm they inhabit. The studio’s announcement of the original cast reprising their roles for Shrek 5 has left us eagerly anticipating this much-awaited sequel featuring Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz once more.
So, where does his long-term project stand now? Well, we have some clarity on that, thanks to a beloved Canadian character actor. At this year’s Vulture Festival, he shared that he is currently engaged in bringing back the cranky green creature for another cinematic adventure.
In a wide-reaching conversation about his truly iconic career, Myers revealed that he’s already started work on the latest installment in the franchise, but also that there may still be a long ways to go before it hits cinema screens. When asked directly whether he’d started work on voicing Shrek, Myers replied, “I have. But I don’t get to see them until later.”
What’s The Status of ‘Shrek 5’ and Who is Returning to Reprise Their Roles?
Shrek is a major animation franchise in Hollywood’s history, spanning four movies from 2001 to 2010. These films, led by Mike Myers, have collectively earned close to $3 billion globally, and spin-offs like Puss in Boots have added another billion. The main cast is likely to reunite for more adventures, and even John Lithgow, who voiced Lord Farquaad, hopes to join the fun if they’ll let him.
The gap between “Shrek Forever After” and the fifth movie (yet to be named) will exceed 14 years, but the love for these films remains strong, if not stronger. In fact, “Shrek” has grown more popular as a cherished memory from childhood for many Millennials, who are now passing on their appreciation for its unique spin on fairytales to their children from Gen Z and Gen Alpha. The success of the “Puss in Boots” spin-offs among both critics and fans serves as proof. Incredibly, even Al Pacino is a diehard “Shrek” fan – the ogre is the central figure on his phone case.
When queried whether he has talked with Diaz or Murphy regarding the project so far, Myers responded that he hasn’t, but he did express high compliments for his fellow actor and the lead in the much-anticipated Donkey sequel film.
I adore Donkey to pieces and would be thrilled if he could reside in my home. This character is one of my favorites, and while I find Eddie incredibly funny, kind-hearted, and generous, there’s something about Donkey that just gets me pumped up. Hearing and seeing him never fails to excite me. Meeting Eddie at events and such is enjoyable too, as he’s a really cool guy – way cooler than I could ever hope to be!
In June, Murphy disclosed that he had been working on “Shrek 5” several months prior, stating that he had already recorded the initial act and planned to complete it this year. DreamWorks also set a release date for the film earlier this year: July 1, 2026, which coincides with the 4th of July summer holiday weekend, considered one of the biggest box office weekends during the summer.
It truly feels like the return of Shrek is not so Far, Far Away after all.
