As a die-hard fan of the hilarious duo Wayne Campbell and Garth Algar from “Wayne’s World,” I have to say that Mike Myers‘ creative vision for a sequel is truly inspiring! The idea of Wayne establishing his own heavy-metal state, the Kingdom of Waynedavia, is a brilliant concept that would have taken the franchise to new heights.
As a devoted cinema enthusiast, I’d put it this way: In a heartfelt conversation with Vulture, the talented actor who brought Austin Powers and Shrek to life confessed that he had reservations about creating a sequel for one of his most cherished comedies. It wasn’t about Austin Powers in Goldmember or Shrek the Third, but rather the 1993 comedy sequel following the misadventures of rock fans Wayne Campbell and Garth Algar. Mike Myers, the man behind these iconic characters, admitted that he felt reluctant to produce a second chapter in their two-movie saga about public-access TV hosts.
I wasn’t keen on making a second version. I didn’t believe it required a follow-up. Spending a lot of time with Austin Powers, we pondered over what would entice the audience to return. We aimed to show our gratitude for watching the first one and then the first two… I couldn’t fathom why ‘Wayne’s World’ needed another appearance.
When considering the sequels of “Wayne’s World 2” and “Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me,” it appears that director Mike Myers was puzzled as to why viewers were interested in seeing Wayne and Garth return, compared to his own idea for Austin Powers. However, despite having reservations about the sequel, Myers had a unique vision regarding how it should unfold differently.
Mike Myers Wanted Wayne to Start His Own Country in the Sequel
Initially doubtful about another installment of “Wayne’s World“, Mike Myers found himself unable to suppress his creative instincts. He pictured a sequel, “Wayne’s World 2“, where his character, Wayne Campbell, ascends as the king of a rock-and-roll nation, all created by his own imagination. Whether this concept surpasses what eventually came to fruition is for you to decide once you read about Myers’ vision below…
Originally, I envisioned something completely different: Wayne would establish his own nation, christened as the Heavy Metal State. Unearthed documents from the Revolutionary War reveal that Aurora never agreed to join America. Tensions arise when the local elders oppose Wayne’s proposal for a rock concert. Unperturbed, Wayne declares, “So be it, we are now the Kingdom of Waynedavia,” thus inaugurating the first Heavy Metal State.
According to the movie “Passport to Pimlico,” Myers required the rights to the 1949 British comedy for his plan of creating the Kingdom of Waynedavia. However, due to filming for “Wayne’s World 2” starting in only 10 weeks, Myers couldn’t arrange everything on time, resulting in him having to change the sequel into a version he now appears to regret.
The first “Wayne’s World” movie, which originated from a Saturday Night Live sketch, debuted in 1992 and revolves around Wayne and Garth as they navigate their public-access show being taken over by a slick producer aiming to transition them into commercial television. Receiving favorable reviews (79% on Rotten Tomatoes), the sequel focuses on Wayne’s endeavor to organize his own rock concert. Just like its predecessor, “Wayne’s World 2” was also generally well-received (61%) and garnered a 3/4 star rating from renowned film critic Roger Ebert. Interestingly, these reviews surpassed the reception of the two sequels to “Austin Powers”. Perhaps Mike Myers should be informed about this!
