Mike Rinder, Scientology Whistleblower Who Won an Emmy Exposing Organization, Dies at 69

Mike Rinder, a previous high-ranking member of the Church of Scientology, passed away at the age of 69. Alongside fellow ex-member Leah Remini, he revealed the organization’s inner workings through a podcast and an Emmy-winning documentary series.

As I take my final steps into the gaming realm, I’ve fulfilled the unchangeable rule that time and taxes are the only constants in life. My personal blog was the stage for my last act, a poignant reflection of my journey. The one regret that gnaws at me is not having accomplished what I had set out to do – dismantling the abuses within Scientology.

Nazanin Boniadi, an actress and former member of Scientology, expressed her deep sadness upon the passing of a person she knew who was exceptionally kind-hearted and courageous. Farewell, Mike Rinder,” wrote on X.

April 10, 1955 saw the birth of Rinder in Adelaide, Australia. His parents were part of Scientology when he was young, and he spent his childhood within the organization. At age 18, he enlisted with Scientology’s Sea Org, a high-ranking staff sector. He climbed the ranks over time and eventually held the position of executive director for the Office of Special Affairs. This role made him the public face of Scientology, as well as, in his own words, the mastermind behind various PR tactics such as negative campaigns against journalists, former members, and critics of Scientology, which included smear and intimidation strategies.

Rinder headed the Office of Special Affairs for 25 years until he was dismissed in 2005.

Rinder teamed up with actress Leah Remini, who parted ways with Scientology in 2013, and together they worked on the A&E investigative documentary series titled “Leah Remini: Investigating Scientology“, which premiered in November 2016. Over three seasons, spanning 37 episodes, this series aired. During these seasons, Rinder served as co-host alongside Remini. For the final season and the two-hour special that broadcast in 2019, Rinder took on the role of executive producer for the show.

The TV show Scientology and the Aftermath was honored with two Primetime Emmys: one in 2017 for exceptional informational series or special, and another in 2020 for the best hosted nonfiction series or special. In the latter win, Rinder was also awarded an Emmy.

Moreover, Rinder was prominently featured in various documentaries and special news programs concerning Scientology. Notably, he appeared in the BBC’s 2010 Panorama episode titled “The Secrets of Scientology” and Alex Gibney’s 2015 HBO documentary named “Going Clear: Scientology and the Belief System.
