Mike Van Named First-Ever CEO of Billboard

Mike Van has been named the inaugural CEO of Billboard, a role he was promoted to from his previous position as the president of the company, according to an announcement made on Monday.

In 2018, Van began working at Billboard after having worked previously at Pandora, Electric Arts, and Complex. He was promoted to president in 2022, and now, as CEO, he will manage both the editorial and business sectors of Billboard. Hannah Karp, the current editor in chief of Billboard, will now report directly to Van. Van himself will answer to Jay Penske, who is the CEO of Penske Media Corporation (PMC), which also owns The Hollywood Reporter.

Penske declared that Mike is an exceptional, unique leader, visionary, and collaborator. His unwavering dedication to the Billboard brand and his future plans for it have always made him stand out. Mike has created a cooperative work environment where everyone on the team is dedicated to growing a powerful global business, constantly innovating and paving new paths. It’s been awe-inspiring to witness the remarkable expansion of Billboard over the past few years, and I eagerly anticipate seeing the brand flourish further under Mike’s guidance.

In his role as CEO, Billboard appointed Van to manage the company’s strategic planning, financial performance, day-to-day operations, live events, international licensing agreements, and partnership deals. Beyond its industry-recognized publications and charts, Billboard is renowned for organizing significant live events such as the Billboard Music Awards, Billboard Latin Music Week, and Billboard Women in Music, among others.

Van expressed in a statement that it’s an unparalleled privilege to head Billboard and the team. Together, we’ve fostered an environment of exceptional quality. The achievements we’ve made over the past few years are truly remarkable, especially considering the challenging media industry landscape with shrinkage and mergers. I am incredibly proud to preserve this legacy as we chart the course for the next 125 years, by continuing to honor artist and executive milestones through our charts, content, expanding global intellectual property, and innovating our iconic live events, solidifying our status as the definitive authority on music business and culture.
