As a seasoned film critic with decades of experience under my belt, I must say that the revelation by Miles Teller about his desire to get back into “Top Gun shape” for the anticipated sequel, Top Gun 3, is both intriguing and understandable. In my younger days, I too had to endure the grueling physical demands of action movies, though none quite as iconic or exhilarating as the Top Gun franchise.
As we eagerly wait for further updates on the upcoming sequel of the popular action movie, “Top Gun 3”, star Tom Cruise’s co-star from “Top Gun: Maverick”, Glen Powell (who joined the franchise as Bradley ‘Rooster’ Bradshaw in 2022), has shared one crucial request if he is to reprise his role. In a recent conversation with Collider, Powell expressed that, should he pilot the cockpit once more, he requires ample advance notice so he can get himself back into “Top Gun” physical form.
“I’m waiting to find out what happens next. Tom claims he’s the one with the inside scoop and has promised to give me plenty of time to shape up like Maverick from Top Gun. That was all I needed him to do.
As a film enthusiast myself, I can’t help but understand why Tom Cruise (Teller in this context) yearns for some time to get back into shape before the cameras start rolling for Top Gun 3. The physical demands of making these movies are much more intense than one might initially assume. Moreover, during the promotional run for Top Gun: Maverick, Tom and his fellow cast members gained quite a bit of attention due to their impressive physiques, thanks to those shirtless beach scenes. It’s evident that he aims to replicate that success in the third installment.
Can ‘Top Gun 3’ Equal the Critical & Box Office Success of ‘Maverick’?
It’s been shared that the production of Top Gun 3 is currently in its initial stages, but beyond this, no further details about the project have been disclosed. As per Miles Teller, there’s a strong desire among those involved to move forward with this action sequel. Given the film’s widespread praise and a staggering $1.496 billion global gross, this ambition is hardly unexpected.
“But there’s a lot of excitement at both ends, from the fans and from the Top Gun team.”
Launched in May 2022, this film is a sequel to the 1986 classic directed by Tony Scott and takes place over thirty years later. Similar to its predecessor, the story follows Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell as he trains a group of Top Gun graduates for a secret mission. During this mission, Maverick meets Bradley Bradshaw, also known as ‘Rooster’, the son of his late friend Nick ‘Goose’ Bradshaw. Together, they are faced with a task that requires the utmost sacrifice from those who will be selected to complete it.
Despite keeping the specifics like plot, characters, and other details hidden, renowned producer Jerry Bruckheimer hinted that director Joseph Kosinski has an exciting concept in mind for the continuation of Top Gun: Maverick.
Tom Cruise will likely be starring in an upcoming project. We’ve had the privilege of working with him, and let me tell you, he’s fantastic! A great idea for this project came from director Joe Kosinski, and Tom showed interest right away. However, due to his busy schedule – currently filming Mission: Impossible and another project afterward – it’s uncertain when production will start. If we can come up with a screenplay that Tom loves, we might be soaring through the skies again!
In an upcoming turn of events, Miles Teller will appear alongside Anya Taylor-Joy in the survival action movie titled “The Gorge.” This film is set for release on Apple TV+ on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 2025.
