As a seasoned movie critic who has witnessed the rise of countless stars and productions, I must say that Millie Bobby Brown‘s journey from Eleven to Nineteen Steps is nothing short of remarkable. With her star power and knack for choosing captivating roles, she continues to push boundaries and challenge herself in the entertainment industry.
Today, Deadline announced that the popular “Stranger Things” actress Millie Bobby Brown is set to transform her globally recognized debut novel “Nineteen Steps” into a Netflix movie. Not only will she grace the screen in this project, but Brown will also produce it under her PCMA Productions label. The adaptation of the film will be handled by four-time Oscar-nominated writer and producer Anthony McCarten (“I Wanna Dance with Somebody”, “Bohemian Rhapsody”). Jonathan Eirich serves as a producer, while Nick Reynolds is the executive producer for Rideback.
Netflix and Millie Bobby Brown have had a long relationship, with Brown’s iconic role as Eleven in the hit series Stranger Things catapulting her to global stardom on the streaming platform. Following its final season next year, Brown has continued her collaboration with Netflix, appearing in movies such as Damsel and Enola Holmes, and blockbusters like Godzilla vs. Kong and Godzilla: King of the Monsters. Their latest joint project is the Russo Brothers’ film, The Electric State, where Brown will share screen time with Chris Pratt. The movie is currently in post-production and is scheduled for release in March 2025.
In 2023, I found myself immersed in Brown’s gripping World War II novel, a tale inspired by her very own grandmother’s life story. Titled “Nineteen Steps,” this moving narrative unfolds around the life of 18-year-old Nellie Morris, who resides in bustling East London during the tumultuous year of 1943. The novel follows Nellie as she bravely faces the harsh realities of war – the constant bomb threats, rationing, and the heartache that comes with it all.
Anthony McCarten and Rideback Will Bring Nineteen Steps to Life
Brown’s novel is skillfully handled by McCarten, as he has previously penned screenplays for critically acclaimed films like “The Theory of Everything” and “Darkest Hour,” which were major box office hits worldwide. Apart from “Nineteen Steps,” McCarten currently has another project in the works: “The Collaboration“. This film is an adaptation of his own play, focusing on the friendship between renowned artists Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat. The play made its debut in 2022 at the Young Vic in London, with Paul Bettany and Jeremy Pope portraying Warhol and Basquiat respectively. It later moved to Broadway for an extended run until last February. Bettany and Pope will reprise their roles in the upcoming film version.
Although Rideback may not be familiar to many, this company has played a significant role in some major box-office hits like IT, The Haunted Mansion, and Aladdin. Recently, the founder and esteemed producer Dan Lin departed from Rideback for a prominent position as Head of Netflix’s Film Division. Since then, Jonathan Eirich and Michael Lofaso have taken over as co-CEOs. Currently, they are in post-production for Disney’s Lilo and Stitch, scheduled to be released in US theatres next summer. A sneak peek at the updated CGI character of Stitch in this live-action film was unveiled a few weeks ago during D23, and you can see it below:
