Minecraft Movie Crushes Captain America at Box Office, Becomes Highest-Grossing Film of 2025

The Minecraft Film has been unstoppable at the box office, surpassing all predictions during its debut weekend and now continuing to rake in substantial earnings. Not only is it still making a fortune, but it has also overtaken Captain America: Brave New World to claim the top spot globally for highest-grossing film of 2025 so far. This weekend, it’s expected to maintain its position and earn another $80 million. After just two weeks in theaters, the total earnings from The Minecraft Film are projected to reach approximately $280 million.

What’s particularly noteworthy about this accomplishment is that it outshines four other movies that claimed the top four spots in the weekend box office. Coming in second, we have “King of Kings” with a gross of $17 million, then “The Amateur,” starring Rami Malek, which earned $15 million for third place. The fourth spot was a close call between “Warfare” and “Drop,” with “Warfare” narrowly edging out “Drop” at $8 million, while the Blumhouse horror film brought in $7.7 million. Amidst numerous new films to choose from, it’s “A Minecraft Movie” that remains popular among audiences as they continue to seek out theater experiences.

As a cinema enthusiast, I must say that my personal experience with Jared Hess’s take on the widely beloved video game, featuring Jack Black and Jason Momoa alongside others, has been quite intriguing. While some critics have voiced concerns about its predictable plotline, it’s undeniable that audiences at large seem to have taken a liking to this film. Social media buzz and trends have even propelled many moviegoers to catch A Minecraft Movie in theaters.

‘A Minecraft Movie’ Dethrones Its Marvel Studios Competition

The “Minecraft Film” has broken new ground in the realm of video game adaptations, earning a record-breaking $162.8 million on release, making it the highest-grossing video game movie ever. Interestingly, this Warner Bros. production has also surpassed the first Marvel Studios film of this year, titled “Captain America: New World Order“. Similar to the “Minecraft Film”, the latest installment of Captain America received a mix of positive and negative feedback from critics. Unfortunately, unlike “Minecraft”, the Marvel Cinematic Universe film didn’t receive the same level of success with its audience, as it failed to garner as much at the box office in its opening weekend as the video game adaptation has now amassed.

Currently, a Minecraft film leads the pack among domestic releases this year. However, there’s a host of high-profile projects set to debut in 2025, including Ryan Coogler’s Sinners, which is generating lots of buzz. Additionally, two more Marvel Cinematic Universe films are due out this year and could potentially dethrone Minecraft domestically. Thunderbolts and The Fantastic Four: First Steps boast impressive casts and are expected to have robust opening weekends.
