The film titled “A Minecraft Movie” is undeniably packed with Easter eggs and scenes tailored for enthusiasts of the game – just look at the excitement surrounding the chicken jockey moment! Yet, it’s not only that; it also boasts numerous nods to the legendary 2004 film, “Napoleon Dynamite”. You heard it right. The director behind both movies, Jared Hess, is shedding light on the Easter eggs in his upcoming movie schedule related to his early-2000s comedy, which ties back to “Napoleon Dynamite”.
As soon as the Minecraft Movie hit the theaters, I rushed to catch it and noticed it was set in Idaho with a llama featured. I assumed these were nods to Hess’s 2005 cult classic, but now he’s confirmed they were, along with some other Easter eggs that Napoleon himself would appreciate. Here’s an Instagram post outlining them all:

Alright, let’s break some of these down.
It’s clear that the choice of Idaho as the setting for the characters in A Minecraft Movie is a nod to the movie Napoleon Dynamite. Given my upbringing on the border between Washington and Idaho, and my frequent references to the 2005 comedy due to its setting, I didn’t fail to notice that connection.

You can currently stream Napoleon Dynamite with a Hulu subscription.
Absolutely, tater tots serve as a reference to the movie too. Just like Napoleon, _Minecraft’s_ Henry carries tater tots to school. However, unlike Napoleon who carries them in a fanny pack due to being “famished,” Henry’s reason is not because he’s starving. Interestingly, Henry is much more willing to share than Napoleon, making this a humorous contrast.
The post also demonstrates similarities with llamas; both in the game’s Overworld and reality, you can observe a llama. Regrettably, no actual dialogue from “Napoleon Dynamite” was employed when the creature was spotted, and to my knowledge, none of them were referred to as Tina.
The article additionally mentions that the character played by Jason Momoa, Garrett, has a reputation similar to a high school legend, reminiscent of the character Uncle Rico.
Indeed, Easter eggs from the film “Napoleon Dynamite” can be found everywhere, and I always enjoy spotting them. Similarly, Hess expresses his enthusiasm for them, stating that incorporating such references was inevitable for him during an interview with IGN.
It’s challenging to break free from the influences that significantly shaped your teenage years. In this film, you’ll find a modern take on Idaho, some tater tot references, and even some llamas. Perhaps they’ve become an inherent part of me.
Instead of hoping for a notable appearance from the cast of “Napoleon Dynamite”, an impressive dance scene, or perhaps a “Vote for Pedro” mention, I’m quite satisfied with what we received. The subtle and intricate Easter eggs in this movie remind me of the secret language that only true fans understand, making Hess’s latest project even more enjoyable for those who used to exclaim “Gosh!” like Napoleon. These references in “A Minecraft Movie” were delightful discoveries for me.
Currently, “A Minecraft Movie” is enjoying a significant triumph at the box office. It’s my hope that this success will steer younger viewers towards Hess’s earlier works, such as “Napoleon Dynamite”, so they can appreciate the amusing context and history behind the character and the abundance of tater tots.
