As a gamer who has grown up with comic books and blockbuster movies, I can’t help but feel a pang of disappointment at the absence of Josh Brolin‘s Cable in the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) installment. Having followed the X-Force saga since its inception, it was a dream come true to see Deadpool and Wolverine share the screen, but the lack of Cable and Domino left a gaping hole.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been keeping us entertained for over a decade, thanks to new releases in theaters and streaming with a Disney+ subscription. The latest movie to hit hte big screen was Deadpool & Wolverine, which broke records at the box office. And while Hugh Jackman returned as Logan, the movie was noticeably missing Josh Brolin’s Cable. And now Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld has weighed in on Cable seemingly not being part of the MCU.
Fans who have been eagerly following Marvel films for years finally saw Wade Wilson enter the fray during “Deadpool & Wolverine“, but regrettably, Josh Brolin, who plays Thanos, was not present as Cable and it seems he won’t reprise his role in the MCU. Creator Rob Liefeld shared his thoughts on the matter via Twitter.
What a pity it is that we’re not capitalizing on the chance to have Josh Brolin portray more of the character, Cable, in X-Force movies. Period.
It appears he was straightforward in his statement. He seemed to appreciate Brolin’s portrayal of Cable in Deadpool 2, wanting to see further development of the futuristic character. There had been discussions about an X-Force movie, but it never materialized. Matters became more intricate when Disney purchased 20th Century Fox and its assets, leading Leifleld to express a desire for more Cable before things became this complicated.
Due to Josh Brolin’s remarkable portrayal of Thanos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it seems logical that Marvel Studios might choose not to reassign him to another role. Although advanced motion capture and visual effects were crucial for creating the Mad Titan, his distinctive voice also left a lasting impression. As of now, there’s no hint that any X-Men character will be rejoining the shared universe with Brolin in the cast.
In the summer, when Deadpool and Wolverine appeared on screens, the character commonly known as “The Merc with A Mouth” was conspicuously lacking a couple of key figures. Specifically, Cable and Domino, played by Zazie Beetz, were notably absent in the third installment. It’s uncertain why they weren’t included, although it’s clear that this movie primarily centered around its two title characters.
Besides Brolin’s successful portrayal of Thanos, another possible factor hindering the studio’s progress with these characters might be their strong connection to the X-Men universe. As for Kevin Feige’s future plans for the X-Men, they remain unclear at this point. It is possible that they decided to utilize Cable and Domino in different roles instead.
It’s undeniable that Deadpool 3 thrived significantly, regardless of certain characters. Consequently, fans anticipate that the key characters will play significant roles in forthcoming Marvel films. Here’s hoping for more insights into that and the X-Men in the near future.
Upcoming in theaters on Valentine’s Day, February 14th, is the latest MCU film titled “Captain America: A New World“. In the meantime, take a look at the 2025 movie release schedule.
