Mithun Chakraborty slapped with show cause notice from BMC; what’s wrong? Find out

The Bollywood actor Mithun Chakraborty has received a question-and-answer notice from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) due to accusations that he constructed unapproved ground-level buildings on a property situated in Erangle village, which falls within the Malad area.

On May 17, 2025, Mithun Chakraborty apparently disputed the accusations, stating categorically that no unauthorized buildings stood on his land. Reports suggest he clarified that multiple individuals had received notices and that a comprehensive rebuttal was being drafted to be sent to the BMC.

On May 10th, I was officially notified about certain alterations made to my property. I’m expected to present a legitimate explanation for these changes. If I fail to do so, it’s on me to bear the costs of demolishing the structure myself. Moreover, a warning was issued that potential legal action might ensue if no response is forthcoming from my end, by the city administration.

Last week, the BMC launched a sweep in the Madh locality following the discovery of approximately 130 unauthorized buildings, which allegedly used fake construction plans. It was revealed that nine such structures, including some in Erangle village, had already been demolished on May 9th. The authorities further mentioned that all 130 illegal buildings, constructed over the past year, are set to be razed by May 31st.

I, as a conscientious observer, have learned that civic authorities have pointed out that certain structures on a specific plot were erected without obtaining the proper approval from the appropriate authority. This revelation led to the BMC delivering a show cause notice to Mithun Chakraborty on May 10th. The BMC emphasized the extent of construction on the site, stating that the work done contravened Sections 337, 342, and 347 of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act of 1888.

The local authority has asked the individual to offer a genuine reason within seven days after receiving the notification, explaining why the specified structure or project shouldn’t be taken down, modified, or destroyed, or the property returned to its initial purpose.

The announcement also states that if an acceptable explanation isn’t provided, the building will be torn down at the owner’s cost and risk. Moreover, a warning has been given that the individual might face legal consequences. According to Section 475A of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act, such infractions could lead to fines and imprisonment.

As reported by the BMC, a show-cause notice has been issued following the guidelines specified under Section 351(1A) of the relevant act.
