Miyamoto Regrets Super Mario Sunshine—But It’s Still Hitting Switch 2 and Fans Are Divided

Regardless of Shigeru Miyamoto‘s expressed regret over some elements of its design, it has been confirmed that the game “Super Sunshine” will indeed be released on the second day.

The upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 model is eagerly awaited and is slated to supersede the existing one, promising a lineup of popular games, ranging from sequels, remakes, or enhanced versions. One such game is Super Mario Sunshine, included in the GameCube collection, which will revive classic titles originally from this cherished console.

Miyamoto Previously Shared Criticisms of Super Mario Sunshine

It Was Maybe a Bit Tougher Than Anticipated

2002 saw Miyamoto discussing Super Mario Sunshine with Nintendo Dream, a popular Japanese magazine focused on Nintendo. In this interview, he expressed his desire for Super Mario Sunshine to be an enjoyable game for all age groups, including grandparents and young children. According to him, Mario games are meant to cater to everyone.

He commented that, in his opinion, ‘Super Mario Sunshine’ proved challenging for typical users. This is something he deeply regrets.

Even with its inherent issue, Super Mario Sunshine remains scheduled for release on the Nintendo Switch 2 as part of the GameCube library. This offering is accessible to gamers only if they subscribe to Nintendo Switch Online. When launched, this service will be known as Nintendo Classics on the Switch 2.

Initially, ten games will be added to the GameCube library, though their exact arrival times are yet to be determined. At launch, three titles – “The Wind Waker”, “F-Zero GX”, and “Soul Calibur 2” – will be available. The remaining seven games do not currently have a release date.

Regardless of Miyamoto’s criticisms, Super Mario Sunshine remains a standout title in the series. The control scheme may require some patience (even for grandparents), but the overall gameplay is enjoyable for most Mario enthusiasts. It would be wise of Nintendo to include this game among the GameCube titles on the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, further enticing fans to buy and pre-order the console.
