Moana 2 Ending: Auli’i Cravalho And The Filmmakers Tease What The Final Moments And Mid-Credits Scene Could Mean For Moana’s Future

As a gamer who’s been through countless adventures and plot twists, I must say, the ending of Moana 2 has left me quite intrigued! The revelation that Moana might have become a demigod herself is as surprising as finding a hidden chest full of rare loot in a video game.

It’s surprising, isn’t it? I wouldn’t have thought that Marvel’s practice of post-credits scenes would extend to a Walt Disney Animation film. Yet, that’s exactly what happened at the end of the sequel for Moana. With the news that her return won’t be in one of the upcoming Disney movies and anticipation high for its box office debut, we can now discuss how her second journey fares and potentially, hint at Moana 3. TopMob sat down with Auli’i Cravalho and the filmmakers to get their thoughts on the ending of Moana 2 and the character’s future.

What Auli’i Cravalho And The Directors Say About The Moana 2 Ending

In the finale of Moana 2, Moana, Maui, and their team manage to locate the island of Motufetu, restoring their people’s connection. The journey is fraught with hazard and peril. As they work to resurrect the sunken island, Moana bravely dives into the ocean to lift the curse afflicting it, only to risk her life in the process. However, Maui intervenes, saving Moana, and with the guidance of their ancestors, they miraculously revive her. The magical event grants Moana her first tattoos as a wayfinder, and based on my interpretation, she transforms into a demigod herself. To clarify, I asked Auli’i Cravalho about this, and here is her response:

What do you think? …It opens a whole new world. That’s all I can say.

Cravalho left it up to me to interpret the ending, and based on her reply and the movie as a whole, I have a strong suspicion that I’m right. It seems to me that Moana has become a demigod herself! When I questioned writer/director Dana Ledoux-Miller, she was also tight-lipped about it, but she did hint by saying:

In essence, the movie revolves around self-discovery and understanding that one’s identity is an ongoing journey. As Gramma Tala puts it, you never cease defining who you are. Initially, Moana believed she had a clear grasp of her identity in the first film, but life has a way of altering things, leading to growth and self-exploration. In this sequel, Moana finds herself at a crossroads where she must make significant decisions that will impact the fate of her people, understanding that every choice carries consequences.

It’s subtle, but it seems she might be hinting at the fact that Moana finds herself in grave danger this time, with her very life hanging in the balance. Her ancestors manage to save her, yet now, as a hero who has been resurrected by the gods, her path forward is likely to become even more intricate and complex.

Could There Be A Moana 3?

This takes us to a mid-credit scene in Moana 2, where we learn that Moana’s struggles are far from over. The scene unveils the malevolent storm deity Nalo, who has imprisoned Matangi. As Matangi pleads for freedom, Nalo hints at more sinister plans yet to come. Interestingly, Tamatoa makes an appearance as well, potentially aligning with the impending danger. When I questioned Auli’i Cravalho about her future portrayal of Moana, she responded thus:

I’m deeply attached to this character, having felt her presence deep within me for many years now. I fervently pray our bond remains unbroken, and I won’t ever need to part ways with her.

As a passionate gamer, it feels like my own Polynesian adventure isn’t over yet with Moana! In a recent chat with the Chief Creative Officer of Walt Disney Animation, I was given a hint that Moana’s tale might just keep unfolding. Here’s what he had to say about the post-credit scene: “Stay tuned, there could be more Moana in your future!

I’d say, I would be very excited to be back on the canoe with Moana and Maui.

Let’s wait and see! The success in the box office for “Moana 2” will likely determine its future, I assume. So far, it has been generally well-received by critics, albeit with some criticism about Lin-Manuel Miranda not contributing to the music this time around. You can read TopMob’s review of “Moana 2,” where they’ve given the movie a score of 3.5 out of 5 stars.
