As someone who has spent countless hours in movie theaters, from the dimly lit halls of indie cinemas to the sprawling complexes of multiplexes, I must say that the latest trend in theater snackware has me both intrigued and slightly bewildered. The upcoming Disney movie, Moana 2, is taking us on a new voyage with its popcorn bucket… and a nacho boat!
We find ourselves in a unique era where theater snack containers are becoming more and more extravagant. It appears that movies aren’t just focusing on selling tickets anymore; they’re also aiming to sell merchandise within the theater at the same time. This trend has primarily manifested as increasingly intricate popcorn buckets, but the upcoming Disney film Moana 2 is breaking new ground. Indeed, Moana 2 will offer a popcorn bucket, but it’s also introducing something novel: a nacho boat.
The collection of merchandise for the upcoming movie “Moana 2”, exclusively available at Regal theaters, has been revealed (by Pop Crave). Among the usual popcorn bucket, there’s a wave-shaped one depicting Moana in communion, and you can also purchase an outrigger canoe filled with nachos. Here it is!
I love my movie snacks but I’ll be the first to admit that movie theater nachos are never on the list. They look like the stuff that was served in my elementary school which is far from appetizing. And yet, here I am thinking I might have to eat nachos when Moana 2‘s release date arrives later this month because I kind of want this boat.
It’s clear that the expansion of snack delivery for movies is still on the rise, as we move from the amusingly accidental popcorn buckets like those seen in Dune: Part Two, to deliberately humorous ones such as the ones for Deadpool & Wolverine. Nowadays, almost every significant film release includes at least one popcorn bucket.
In addition to Moana 2’s merchandise, there’s also an intriguing drink container adorned with decorative elements on the top. There’s also a classic popcorn bucket bearing the movie’s insignia, but let’s be honest, it’s not as appealing. If you care about such things, a simple logo just doesn’t cut it.
In my role as the theme park expert at TopMob, I’ve certainly encountered some extraordinary instances of popcorn bucket mania. These buckets are highly sought-after items not only at Disney Parks but also at Universal Studios. Believe it or not, there have been times when the lines for these popcorn buckets were longer than the queues for the actual attractions at Disney World, making waiting in line a common occurrence.
One primary reason I’m not fond of accumulating popcorn buckets is because they often wind up gathering dust on a shelf. Instead, my kids could enjoy a Moana-themed nacho boat, making it more lively outside the cinema. Plus, it would be used in ways that are less debatable compared to the uses people find for the Dune popcorn bucket.
