Critics who’ve seen early screenings this week have been impressed by its animation but found the storyline to lack significant depth compared to the original. Interestingly, the concept for a TV series sequel was initially developed for Disney+, but the highly-anticipated follow-up has now moved to the big screen instead. While fans should be pleased with this new installment, those hoping for an impactful and groundbreaking narrative may find it lacking.
This week, critics were given a sneak peek at the upcoming sequel to Moana 2. The consensus is that it boasts stunning animation, although some feel that the narrative struggles to match the storytelling prowess of the original film. Zach Pope describes it as a “beautiful and triumphant sequel” that starts off at a leisurely pace but ultimately delivers on the grandeur and emotion established by its predecessor. Fico Cangiano commends Dwayne Johnson’s portrayal of Maui, stating that he once again elevates the entire journey, although it does revisit some themes from the first film. Kristen Maldonado praises the movie for its familiar cast and “beautiful tale of unity,” finding the animation to be nothing short of enchanting.
Others seem less enthusiastic about Moana 2. Shaurya Chawla appreciates the stunning animation, but feels that it falls short of the original, particularly in the music department. Dave Lee was particularly critical, noting the weak narrative and unimpressive songs, despite an improvement in visual animation.
As a longtime fan of the original movie, I must admit that I was rather disappointed with the sequel. The story felt disjointed and messy, lacking the charm and coherence that made the first one so enjoyable. The songs were underwhelming, failing to capture the same magic as the masterful tunes from the first film. The new characters didn’t leave much of an impression on me, and overall, it felt like a low-budget direct-to-video sequel. If this movie had been developed into a Disney+ limited series instead, I believe it would have worked far better and provided a more satisfying continuation of the story.
‘Moana’ Is Not Done Just Yet
Disney is planning a live-action version of the animated film “Moana,” and the initial photos from the set have surfaced online. Dwayne Johnson, who returns as Maui, has been spotted in a muscular outfit during filming. Despite speculation that “Moana 2” sets up additional sequels, it appears Disney aims to establish a live-action Moana franchise sooner rather than later. The studio is also working on live-action adaptations of “Lilo & Stitch” and “The Lion King’s Mufasa.” Fortunately, the live-action “Moana” will benefit from the star power of Dwayne Johnson, although it remains to be seen how much that will contribute in today’s market.
The upcoming sequel to “Moana” is predicted to rake in substantial earnings at the cinema, given that the original movie holds the title of most-watched on Disney+. However, if viewers don’t react as positively to the sequel compared to the first film, it might be adapted for television instead, as originally intended for “Moana 2”. As we speak, early reviews from critics for the sequel are surfacing, and currently, it holds a Rotten Tomatoes score of 71% with 42 reviews. This is significantly lower than the first film’s Certified Fresh score of 95%.
