Moana 2 Review: Disney's Sequel Is Thrilling But Failed To Reach The Quality Of The Original

As a seasoned gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in various virtual worlds, I can confidently say that Moana 2 is a cinematic adventure worthy of a place in my collection. Having grown up with Disney’s Renaissance classics like Beauty and The Beast, The Lion King, and The Little Mermaid, it’s refreshing to see the studio continuing to produce high-quality sequels that keep audiences engaged and entertained.

Title Date & Creatives of Upcoming Animation: Moana 2

Disney has always been known for its animated blockbusters, especially those that were released during the Renaissance era, like Beauty and The Beast, The Lion King and The Little Mermaid. But we’ve also seen a number of wildly popular hits in recent years like Frozen, Encanto and Moana. The studio has started giving these projects big screen sequels, and the latest of these releases is the aptly-titled Moana 2. Of course, that follow-up had some very big shoes to fill.

Quite some time has elapsed since the original release of Moana, leaving many viewers yearning for the return of Moana, Maui, and their companions (even as enthusiasts can now explore an associated attraction at Disney Parks). However, it’s important to note that while Moana 2 offers a captivating and exhilarating cinematic journey, it is not without its flaws. To clarify: Auli’i Cravalho delivers a breathtaking performance from beginning to end.

Moana 2 has thrilling action that kept me on the edge of my seat

In the sequel to “Moana,” we find ourselves years after the initial storyline. The cherished protagonist, Moana, has grown older and gained wisdom, continuing her unwavering commitment to the island of Motunui and its inhabitants. Over the time gap, there have been changes, one of which is the arrival of Moana’s younger sister Simea, who captivates the audience each time she appears on screen. Having a character younger than Moana serves to emphasize the maturity of Disney’s narrative this time, and provides crucial personal stakes for her upcoming grand adventure.

In the early stages of the movie, Moana’s ancestral wayfinders warn her of a foreboding prediction: she needs to lift the curse upon the concealed island of Motufetu, an island that once connected the entire sea. If Moana fails to establish a new community, her home, Motunui, faces imminent destruction.

Moana embarks on her island with a fresh team of characters, aiming to accomplish her mission. Along the way, there are some incredibly exciting ocean sequences that blend elements of Disney and “The Perfect Storm”. These scenes were particularly captivating on the big screen, underscoring why it’s worth seeing this film in theaters rather than streaming at home. The excitement effectively made the movie’s runtime seem brief.

Auliʻi Cravalho is just as incredible as Moana the second time around.

Auliʻi Cravalho made a splash when she voiced the character Moana in the 2016 original film. Since then, she’s kept busy with various roles, such as those in Mean Girls and reprising her role as Disney’s water-based character in several projects like Ralph Breaks the Internet.

In spite of her real-life maturity, Cravalho seamlessly returned to her role in “Moana 2“. She manages to bring a sense of authenticity to the animated character, making her seem incredibly lifelike, even amidst the fantastical elements of the sequel’s storyline.

Discussing Cravalho’s performance wouldn’t be complete without mentioning her singing, particularly in Moana’s latest song “Beyond.” Remarkably, her voice lends an emotional tone to this song, serving as the primary melody throughout the sequel. Fans were already captivated by “How Far I’ll Go,” but Cravalho replicated that heartfelt delivery and smooth vocals in the new track, effectively drawing audiences back into the expanding franchise.

Absolutely, Moana doesn’t embark on this fresh journey all by herself on the silver screen. She’s accompanied by her lovable companions Pua and Heihei, and not to forget, Dwayne Johnson’s character, Maui, becomes an integral part of the action as well.

In addition, we encounter several fresh characters, among them are three locals from Motunui who embark on Moana’s extended voyage in search of Motufetu. Regrettably, the characters Loto, Kele, and Moni aren’t very well-rounded. This could be due to the initial plan for Moana 2 as a television series, providing ample opportunity to expand these new characters over time.

In a simpler and more conversational style, Matangi, the new villain, faces a similar issue as her role is limited in the film. Although she makes an early appearance and performs a significant musical scene, she appears sparsely in the rest of the movie. Alicia Silverstone’s performance helps to keep up the momentum in Moana 2, but some parts might make audiences question the storytelling choices.

The music suffers without Lin-Manuel Miranda

Just like the original, both ‘Moana’ and its follow-up are animated musicals filled with tunes that reflect the characters’ emotions. The sequel does include catchy numbers such as “Beyond”, but it didn’t quite match the lasting impact of the songs from the first movie.

As a devoted admirer, it was Lin-Manuel Miranda, the genius behind “Hamilton,” who penned the melodious tunes for the original “Moana.” Regrettably, he opted not to rejoin for the sequel. Instead, the new compositions were crafted by Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, both gifted musicians with a track record like “The Unofficial Bridgerton Musical.” However, in “Moana 2,” some of their songs didn’t quite resonate as powerfully as hoped.

The first film’s songs were more memorable than those in the new ones, including “Can I Get a Chee Hoo?” which falls short compared to “You’re Welcome.” Instead of humming tunes from Moana 2 after the screening, I found myself reminiscing about the melodies from the original movie.

All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed watching the movie “Moana 2”, and believe it’s an experience best had on a large screen for maximum emotional effect. However, if you’re hoping for a non-stop catchy soundtrack like the 2018 version, you might find yourself slightly underwhelmed. Instead, the visual spectacle of the sequel takes center stage this time, although it’s important to note that Auli’i Cravalho’s performance as her iconic character remains impressive.
