Modern Warfare could be in trouble as devs ‘unhappy’ with Call of Duty 2026

As a long-time fan who’s been through the trenches of Call of Duty since the early Modern Warfare days, it’s disheartening to see the current state of the series I once held dear. The reboot wasn’t a home run, and now it seems like Modern Warfare 4 might be facing some rough waters.

As an ardent admirer, I can’t help but express my deep affection for the original Modern Warfare series. Even die-hard Black Ops enthusiasts would doff their caps to Infinity Ward for the unique perspective they brought to the Call of Duty universe, creating games and characters that have become iconic in the gaming world.

However, the reboot didn’t turn out as favorably as expected. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2019 was quite divisive, similar to Marmite, while Modern Warfare 2 didn’t fare too well. On the other hand, Modern Warfare 3 has been generally well-liked, with Sledgehammer Games delivering what fans wanted.

It seems there’s been some discontent in the boardroom regarding this matter. Allegedly, information suggests that the Modern Warfare series is facing challenges, as the development of Modern Warfare 4 (originally planned for 2026) has reportedly hit a snag due to dissatisfied developers.

In the upcoming Black Ops 6, Treyarch aims to shake up Call of Duty with their omnimovement feature. However, it’s worth noting that Treyarch typically prioritizes skill gaps over mass appeal, which is different from Infinity Ward’s approach. This contrast seems to be a source of frustration among fans regarding the future direction of Modern Warfare.

As reported by well-known insider BobNetworkUK, the development of Modern Warfare 4 has apparently come to a halt due to the team’s dissatisfaction with the game’s storyline and mechanics. According to their statement, Activision is allegedly exerting significant pressure on the entire studio.

It seems that Omnimovement is among the mechanics being criticized, as Bob mentioned with a bit of colorful language, “It appears they dislike it.” The strength of Modern Warfare might lie in its connection to Warzone, given that Infinity Ward’s engine powers the battle royale mode.

Still, Activision will be hot on the heels of the studio to make sure MW4 gets the series back on track, or not to see the light of day again. A new sub-franchise could be on the cards…

The upcoming Modern Warfare 4 is expected to share a similar connection with Modern Warfare 3 (from 2011), much like how Modern Warfare 3 from 2023 might relate to Modern Warfare 2 from 2009. In simpler terms, think of it as each game being a sequel to its previous installment in the series.

Fun fact aside, there are whispers about the upcoming Modern Warfare 4 title potentially recycling maps from the previous Modern Warfare 3 game, such as Dome, Resistance, Seatown, and Village among others.

It’s uncertain if this will hold up, given that Infinity Ward should issue a robust response. Regardless, the method of recycling resources is one of the debatable aspects in Sledgehammer’s present game.
