As a fervent admirer of the indomitable spirit and resilience that Neena Gupta and her daughter Masaba Gupta possess, I find their stories to be nothing short of inspirational. Their journey, fraught with adversity and discrimination, serves as a testament to the power of love, courage, and determination.
Neena Gupta, an esteemed actress who has spent her career in the spotlight, raised her daughter Masaba Gupta alone. Born outside of marriage, Masaba has been open about her personal experiences. From facing ridicule for having skin resembling Om Puri to being advised to consume rasgullas and milk for a “lighter-skinned child,” the expectant mother has shared many aspects of her life recently. More recently, Masaba Gupta disclosed that she faced discrimination in school due to her birth status. She also remembered a classmate from 7th grade calling her a derogatory name for an out-of-wedlock child.
In a recent conversation with MidDay, fashion designer Masaba Gupta spoke candidly about the bullying she faced during her childhood years. She remembered that people knew she was the out-of-wedlock child of Neena Gupta and Viv Richards, and this fact was often used to torment her a hundred percent.
She shared that it was quite intriguing as the children conversed as if they were adults, often echoing phrases they’d heard at home. One child even blurted out, “Hey jerk, I think you’re a jerk kid.” This incident took place when she was in the 7th grade. The designer also reflected on how many people made judgments about her based on her character or appearance.
Masaba Gupta shared stories about how her mother, actress Neena Gupta single-handedly raised her. Additionally, Masaba revealed that Neena had to conceal her growing belly from the public since she couldn’t disclose her pregnancy at the time.
Masaba went on to explain that Neena, her mother, lacked both parents, as Viv Richards, her dad, was not with Neena at the time. Furthermore, Masaba’s father was absent from the picture. Despite being financially strapped, the senior actress embraced the opportunity to raise a child alone, according to Masaba, the designer.
Previously, during an interview with TopMob in 2020, Neena Gupta shared memories where those close to her showed compassion, and a few of her friends even suggested marriage as an option.
In the past, as more and more people expressed empathy towards my situation, my friends began to suggest, “I’ll wed you, that way your daughter can carry your surname.” To which I responded, “Merely for her to inherit a paternal name, I might consider marriage.” – As shared by the actress from Badhaai Ho.
