As someone who has had the privilege of following Masaba Gupta‘s journey, I find her strength and resilience truly inspiring. Her recent experiences with unsolicited advice about her child’s complexion are disheartening but not surprising. It’s 2024, and it seems some people still believe in archaic notions of beauty and fairness.
Masaba Gupta, who is an upcoming mother, has been receiving numerous suggestions regarding childbirth. In a recent conversation with Faye D’Souza, Gupta shared some bizarre and inappropriate advice she’s received, such as tips on having a lighter-skinned child.
Just the other day, I was approached with a remark that left me utterly astonished: “You need to have a rasgulla daily so your little one can be fairer than you.” Recently, during my prenatal massage session 15 days ago, Gupta’s masseuse advised me, “Don’t skip milk (you must consume it). I hope your child won’t end up with a dark complexion.” It’s hard to believe such insensitive comments are still made in this day and age!
Masaba Gupta expressed that the statement seemed so sincere, leaving her without the means to challenge it. At age 34, she shared that all she can do is nurture her child with strength and tenacity sufficient to overcome such criticisms.
Masaba stated, “The subject will be discussed in quiet whispers due to its sensitivity, as some consider using ‘kaali’ (dark) as an insult, which I find completely unreasonable.
The diva asserts that there are many refined, affluent individuals who share this sentiment, and it’s a fact I’ve observed persistently up until now – in the year 2024, it hasn’t budged an inch. Masaba expressed this viewpoint during her recent interview, and Gupta further discussed the prevalence of racism throughout her life, including the ongoing struggles her father, Vivian Richards, encounters due to his skin color, causing him distress even today.
Masaba, well-known for being the daughter of esteemed actress Neena Gupta and the legendary West Indies cricketer, recently got married to actor Satyadeep Mishra in January 2023. The couple announced their upcoming parenthood news in April this year. For those who may not be aware, Masaba and Satyadeep have collaborated on the Netflix series “Masaba Masaba,” which depicts the designer’s personal and professional journeys.
