As a cinephile who has spent countless hours immersed in the world of James Bond, I must admit that my initial reaction to Spectre was one of mild disappointment. After the exceptional Skyfall, it felt like the franchise was taking a step back. However, upon revisiting the film and delving deeper into its making, I’ve come to appreciate certain aspects, particularly the role of Monica Bellucci as Lucia Sciarra.
As a die-hard cinema enthusiast, I must confess that when Spectre hit the screens, it left me somewhat underwhelmed compared to the exceptional experience of Skyfall. Despite being directed by the same visionary and sharing box office success with its predecessor, it seemed to miss the mark in several areas, particularly with its unique portrayal of Blofeld. However, there were certain elements that truly resonated, such as the captivating opening sequence and the unconventional “Bond Girl” role offered to Monica Bellucci.
During her promotional visits for Tim Burton’s movie “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice”, Bellucci spoke with Vanity Fair and discussed some past roles she had. When director Sam Mendes contacted her, she was 50 years old, and she assumed it was for the role of M, which Judi Dench played in “Skyfall” and other Bond films. However, it turned out to be a “Bond Girl” role, making Bellucci the oldest actress ever to play such a character, surpassing Honor Blackman who was 37 when she starred in “Goldfinger”.
What Did Bellucci Have to Say About the “Revolutionary” Role?
In one aspect, Monica Bellucci’s character Donna Lucia Sciarra doesn’t appear frequently in the film ‘Spectre’. However, despite her limited screen time, her performance leaves a substantial impression. It’s a multifaceted role, though not entirely fleshed out, which Bellucci performs admirably. Regarding her portrayal as the oldest Bond girl ever, Bellucci, famously known for ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’, stated:
For an older woman like myself, starring in a Bond film was quite groundbreaking. This role emerged from an era where it was unusual for a mature woman to be so closely associated with James Bond. Additionally, Daniel Craig is younger than me in real life, which just goes to show that times are changing and we’re entering a new phase. Women today have a significant influence on society, and I believe this movie serves as a powerful example of that shift.
2015 saw quite a stir over the casting of Bellucci, considering it’s the same series that had Roger Moore, aged 57, alongside Tanya Roberts, who was 35 but portraying a 29-year-old Bond girl in “A View to a Kill” earlier.
However, with the flow of time, Spectre demonstrates that James Bond isn’t rigid against transformation, be it in terms of the franchise or his personal character.
