In a recent reveal, the latest trailer for Monster Hunter Wilds showcases the eagerly awaited fourth environment – the icy expanse of Iceshard Peaks. This treacherous, frozen landscape is shrouded in mysterious, unexplored ruins and appears to be teeming with unknown horrors.
The new map unveiled for Monster Hunter Wilds now adds a fourth explorable region to the game, with hopes that it won’t be the last. The first area we were introduced to was the Windward Plains, a vast desert landscape where Rey Dau reign supreme among the sand dunes. The second area, the Scarlet Forest, is a dense jungle governed by its fearsome aquatic Apex, Uth Duna. More recently, the Oilwell Basin was also revealed, a subterranean realm that’s been taken over by oil and raging flames. This domain is ruled by Nu Udra, a monstrous cephalopod reminiscent of creatures from H.P. Lovecraft’s horror tales.
In the world of Monster Hunter, nothing quite compares to the Iceshard Cliffs. It’s got this eerie, unique vibe that sets it apart from the Hoarfrost Reach or Frost Islands we’ve known before. But here’s the thing – the Iceshard Cliffs is merely a piece of the grand puzzle that is the Forbidden Lands in Monster Hunter Wilds.
What lies beneath this frozen expanse, I can’t say for sure. Some theories suggest it might be the doing of the unnamed Ice Apex monster hinted at in the trailer. We gamers are still piecing together the clues to unlock the secrets of this frosty domain.
Just as all frozen regions in a Monster Hunter game are inhabited by creatures adapted to their harsh conditions, Velkhana ruled over Iceborne’s icy expanse, while the towering behemoth Goss Harag made his home amongst the snowy plains of Monster Hunter: Rise.
In the frosty expanse of Monster Hunter Wilds’ Iceshard Cliffs, you’ll often encounter fearsome creatures such as the Hirabami. These colossal beings, resembling leviathans floating mid-air, are a chilling addition to the landscape. Equipped with sharp claws on their tails, they have the ability to swiftly transform a peaceful hunting excursion into a harrowing ordeal. They navigate through the air using membranes on their necks that capture the wind, and can even summon additional Hirabami, similar to the Doshaguma did during the game’s initial open beta.
aside from Hirabami, the chilling darkness also conceals the reemergence of Temnoceran Nerscylla. Longtime Monster Hunter enthusiasts eagerly anticipate this resurgence, but novice hunters struggling with arachnophobia are already bracing themselves for another confrontation involving an eight-legged adversary.
Did we mention Gore Magala is back too? Well, good luck with that.
The action-adventure game Monster Hunter Rise will be released on February 28th, available for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and personal computers. In addition, a second open beta test is set to launch this week, providing gamers with another opportunity to immerse themselves in the thrilling hunt.
