Monster Hunter Wilds: How to Beat Gypceros

After a long hiatus from the series, this pesky Feathered Wyvern is causing trouble again. Now, it can be found stalking the expanses of Windward Plains, the main setting and the sole playable region in Monster Hunter Wilds‘ second open beta test.

In this guide, we’ll show you how to take down this particularly troublesome foe.

Gypceros Isn’t Exactly Challenging

Worry not about Gypceros; it’s not an arduous battle to conquer. If you’ve successfully taken down other Bird Wyverns such as Yian Garuga, Pukei-Pukei, or Kulu-Ya-Ku in Monster Hunter Worlds, then you’ll find Gypceros quite similar. Yes, it’s a large creature, but that makes it an even bigger target for your choice of the game’s 14 distinctive weapons, which can easily be used to knock or chop it down.

Following their encounter with Alpha Doshaguma and Rey Dau during the initial open beta, experienced Monster Hunter players may perceive this upcoming battle as less demanding. Essentially, it could be seen as a brief skirmish not requiring extensive time investment. Is it possible that —

“A Flash Of White”

Longtime Monster Hunter enthusiasts might hold a fondness for the creature known as Gypceros, but its lampshade-like crest is something they universally dislike due to its potential to temporarily blind unprepared hunters. When provoked, the Gypceros unleashes an intense light burst that illuminates the entire battlefield and leaves anyone within range momentarily stunned. Unless you’re equipped with a shield or some form of protection, you will find yourself exposed and vulnerable.

When a creature named Gypceros sees you’re incapacitated, it seizes the moment to attack. Using its flexible tail, it lashes out at you. Moreover, it has the ability to emit toxic substances that could potentially be lethal if they come into contact with you.

Before battling Gypceros, make sure to gather Antidotes first, as they neutralize its poison and prevent your health from depleting rapidly. Remember to exercise extra caution when Gypceros becomes enraged; it will dash across the battlefield, releasing numerous toxic pools that could easily shift the fight in its favor.

The fight should last approximately 10-15 minutes, depending on your proficiency with your weapon. In the spirit of Monster Hunter games, you’ll recognize that the monster is near death when it starts limping. After delivering sufficient blows, it will expire. This signals for you to begin carving, but hold up for a moment…

“It’s Not Dead!?”

Absolutely! Veteran Monster Hunter gamers are familiar with the tricky tactic of Gypceros feigning death. When it falls over without a ‘Quest Completed’ message appearing, don’t let your guard down just yet. You might score a free carve, but beware! Once Gypceros jolts back to life and scares you with a sudden attack, retaliation will follow swiftly.

In a single hunt, it can only appear dead, but don’t be fooled. If it falls again and doesn’t show a Slayed or Quest Completed message, beware as you might encounter the terrifying Guardian Ape from Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice all over again.

In Monster Hunter World, I can confirm that Gypceros is back, alongside other familiar faces like Nerscylla and Gore Magala. For all the latest news on Monster Hunter updates, make sure to keep an eye on GFinity.
