Deep within the crumbling ruins of Wyveria, a terrifying mystery lurks: Xu Wu, an enormous, mutated octopus-like creature called a Cephalopod, lies in wait to trap unwary explorers. In Monster Hunter Wilds, your showdown with this colossal entity is unavoidable during the Full Circle quest in Chapter Three of the main storyline. However, there’s no need to tremble! With thoughtful preparation and a well-planned strategy, not only will you come out on top, but you’ll also unlock the highly sought-after Mending Mantle, an exceptional cloak that restores your health, as well as some exclusive rewards.
In this tutorial, let’s delve into the fundamentals of overcoming Xu Wu, exploring its vulnerabilities, offensive strategies, and the methods required for victory.
Element and Status Ailments
Targeting Xu Wu in a chilled state is an effective strategy. This Cephalopod creature is susceptible to cold attacks, so anything that freezes or creates ice will be beneficial to you. To inflict maximum cold damage, focus on striking its mouth and other vulnerable spots.
Of all the status effects, poison inflicts the most damage on Xu Wu. Following closely behind are stun, paralysis, blast, and exhaust. Although these won’t cause as much harm as poison does, Xu Wu is certain to notice their effects.
Regarding consumable pouch items, Xu Wu has a disadvantage when faced with both Shock Trap and Pitfall Trap. However, in this scenario, the Shock Trap is more beneficial as it temporarily slows down the Cephalopod. This gives you an opportunity to recuperate or strategically strike at its vulnerable spot.
Let’s recap the things you must bring to maximize your damage potential against Xu Wu:
- Weapons with ice attacks.
- Ice-based items like Frostburst and Frostpods.
- Anything with poison, paralysis, blast, stun, and exhaust status ailments.
- Shock Trap or Pitfall Trap with the former as the top choice.
- Never forget to bring lots of health potions.
Weak Points
In the remains of Wyveria lies where Xu Wu dwells. Upon entering this locale, take note of your surroundings to get an idea of how you might be swiftly defeated by the Cephalopod. Although Xu Wu is massive in size, it exhibits remarkable agility and even leaps through the air; further details on that coming up.
Knowing where to strike weaknesses in the beast is crucial, but executing precise attacks can be another challenge altogether. Blindly attacking won’t defeat Xu Wu and may only hasten your own downfall. So, it’s essential to focus on striking its vulnerable spots instead.
Thankfully, Xu Wu has eight weak points, and severing some will greatly weaken its attacks:
- Head
- Mouth
- Two front arms
- Four other arms
In direct conflict with Xu Wu, striking his vulnerable spots will inflict harm on him. Yet, there are two circumstances that can alter the outcome of the fight or potentially shield you from premature demise.
Initially, detach the two forward limbs to drastically reduce its ability to attack and lower the probability of a lethal strike. Indeed, Xu Wu has the potential to instantly end your life if you’re unable to dodge its most powerful attack.
Next, strike a forceful blow similar to a Slinger’s, aimed at the opening often referred to as the mouth, which is actually on Xu Wu’s underside where the head or crown normally resides. Keep in mind that this mouth only appears during its deadly attack, and you must act swiftly to prevent it from causing harm.
With a frozen object, wield the Slinger for immense damage, causing Xu Wu to tumble. In this vulnerable position, his mouth gapes wide open, rendering the Cephalopod momentarily incapacitated. Take advantage of this opportunity and attack relentlessly while it’s immobilized!

Attack Patterns
In the game Monster Hunter Worlds, the creature Xu Wu is not tranquil by nature; it’s aggressive and swift, which can be intimidating for beginners. However, being alert and aware of its attack patterns significantly increases your odds of surviving an encounter with it.
Xu Wu’s arms or tentacles serve as useful weapons for penetrating foes, giving the Cephalopod the moniker “Assassin with Piercing Reach.” These appendages are particularly effective in close combat, but they can also inflict substantial damage from a distance on unsuspecting hunters.
Here are some of its notable attacks:
- Tentacle Slam: Xu Wu slams the ground with its two front arms to crush you. Dodge in the opposite direction to avoid damage.
- Blade Projectiles: Xu Wu creates blades with its front arms then throws projectiles at you in quick succession. Either dodge or block the blades to avoid damage.
- Dig Attack: Xu Wu surrounds itself with dust and debris as it digs under the ground. After a while, it appears from above and charges at you. Dodge this attack.
- Piercing Tentacle: Xu Wu moves backward and turns its front arms into blades to quickly pierce you with them. Dodge or block to avoid damage.
- Blade Slam: Xu Wu launches itself into the air and releases projectiles at you before slamming down where you stand. Dive-evade to get yourself out of harm’s way.
- Grab Attack: Xu Wu tilts a bit before attempting to grab you. A Slinger ammo will break you free.
In Monster Hunter Wilds, always avoid standing still for too long as Xu Wu may injure or defeat you. Stay vigilant of its front limbs and sudden stops since it’s likely to launch a powerful and swift attack. Your strategy should be to attack, then move, repeat, with occasional brief pauses.
Should things become chaotic, remember to utilize your Pouch Items. Employ the Shock Trap to slow down the Cephalopod, move to safer ground, and replenish your health using potions. Always avoid allowing Xu Wu to trap you against a wall or else you’re in trouble!
Neglecting to dodge the Grab Attack could lead to Xu Wu devouring you ruthlessly. However, that’s just the beginning of your troubles! If the harm is severe enough to make you unconscious, Xu Wu will consume you whole instead. Give a careful look at that jaw of his!
As the victor, don’t be taken aback when Xu Wu chooses to retreat. This Cephalopod might dart into tight spaces to restrict your maneuverability.
