Catching creatures in Monster Hunter Wilds can be quite challenging if you’re new to the game, as it involves both persistence and using the appropriate lure.
After you’ve finished most of Kanya’s additional tasks, she’ll request that you catch a Whopper. Whoppers are substantial fish found in various bodies of water. You may have encountered them previously in Monster Hunter: World, like Gastronome Tunas and Gajaus. In Wilds, though, they can be more challenging to catch.
With this in mind, here’s how you can successfully capture a Whopper:
1. Go to Area 17 in the Scarlet Forest During Plenty Season
17th Area, famously recognized as the Great Lakeshore, is an ideal destination for seeking Whoppers – these colossal fish can be found roaming freely across the expansive waters. For the best chance of catching them, visit during Plenty Season, particularly in the early morning when they’re most numerous. An interesting fact: altering the weather at your campsite is as simple as taking a break!
Keep an eye out for a group of Harpios birds feeding near the water. This could be a sign that it’s time to throw your fishing net, but ensure you spot some big fish swimming around first, or else your endeavor might not yield any results.
2. Find the Right Bait
Landing Whoppers requires choosing the perfect lure. Luckily, Kanya always supplies the needed lures once you finish her tasks. In the Whopper missions, she offers you two varieties: the Duster Rod setup and the Tough Link Rod setup.
- Duster Rig is used to catch large fish like the Gajau. If you spot a fish with prominent ridges on its back, that’s a Gajau. Simply toss your bait into the water and lure them by flicking the left analog stick (on PS5).
- Tuff Joint Rig is meant for catching Gastronome Tuna and Giant Trevally. If a fish doesn’t have visible ridges, this is the bait to use.
Remember that different fish require unique flicking techniques, so be prepared to try out various methods to find what works best for each one.
3. How to Reel Them In
The true test is about to begin – landing the big catch, the Whopper. If I hadn’t cross-checked the instructions carefully, I might have driven myself crazy since I was making all sorts of mistakes.

After the fish bites your bait, simply follow the fish’s motion with your fishing rod to avoid putting pressure on the hook and exhausting the fish. When the fish slows down or stops moving, that’s your opportunity—pull it in by continuously pressing the left analog stick up and down. This will gradually reel it in. If the fish starts struggling again, continue the process until you successfully land your catch.
