Have you ever felt like the Wound mechanism in Monster Hunter Worlds is excessively potent? It’s a shared sentiment among many gamers. In fact, they argue that this recent gameplay addition is so flawed that it makes it possible for monsters to be easily defeated in just a few minutes.
Although the game’s Focus System might not appear to be a significant problem at first glance, it makes hunts seem less challenging because monsters flinch and stagger with little effort. Every one of the game’s 14 weapons takes advantage of this mechanic, and while some, such as the Gunlance, require more work, others can be easily utilized by just pressing the R1 button on PlayStation 5.
Before diving into the details, let’s explain how the Wound System works.
How Wounds Work
In Monster Hunter Wilds, the updated Wound System lets players focus on a monster’s vulnerable spot by consistently hitting the same body area. When hunters activate Focus Mode, they achieve an enhanced state granting superior camera management and marking the exposed monster part in red, indicating it’s ready for a Focus Assault – signaling that the location is ripe for a targeted attack.
After a blow has been struck, the beast momentarily loses its ability to move and, on occasion, tumbles over. Repeated injuries can render the beast vulnerable during the entire chase, leaving it defenseless.
It seems there’s an issue here, and it might be worthwhile for Capcom to think about tweaking the monsters’ resistances to ensure a more balanced gaming experience.
Trivial Fights
It’s worth noting that this mechanical aspect of the game might make battles seem overly simple because players can focus on vulnerable areas. This becomes particularly apparent in multiplayer settings, where several opponents can collaboratively capitalize on a monster’s weak points simultaneously.

The outcome is a persistent barrage that leaves the beast devoid of any substantial danger, as it spends much of the battle recuperating from internal wounds inflicted by Focus Attacks. Monsters, even formidable ones such as Tempered Gore Magala and Arkveld, appear effortless to overcome when a teammate possesses the Flayer ability.
The Flayer Skill
Among all the skills in the game, the Flayer Skill stands out as the one that’s most in need of repair. This skill amplifies damage to already injured parts during a Focus Attack and facilitates causing wounds more easily. Adding the Flayer Decoration Slot to your armor noticeably speeds up battles, making it an essential component for speedrunners who excel in swift hunts.
Raising the Flayer Skill to level 5 significantly enhances a hunter’s prowess, making it almost effortless to wound monsters. Certain armor sets, such as the Guardian Arkveld Equipment, not only boast an impressive appearance but also pack a powerful punch thanks to their integrated Flayer skill.
The Prime Focus
Absolutely, focusing solely on the Flayer Skill isn’t necessarily the rule for all hunters. Damage-enhancing features such as Attack Boost Decorations and Weakness Exploit remain valuable. But when it comes to swift weapons like Sword & Shield, a monster rendered immobile is essentially defeated due to the high rate of simultaneous damage inflicted.

In other words, although this design decision by Capcom makes the game appealing for beginners who desire a powerful role-playing experience, it ends up putting the monsters at a disadvantage and reducing the length of battles.
What’s the Fix?
It seems that for the moment, there’s no change—yet. Capcom is attentive to the issue and players are thrilled with the skill of hitting Focus Attacks on a monster’s weak spots. As we anticipate potential balance adjustments in future updates, hunters should make the most of this feature while they can.
At least it’s not as bad as the Clutch Claw.
