As a dedicated fan who’s watched my fair share of true crime documentaries and binged every season of “Monster” so far, I’m beyond thrilled about the upcoming third season focusing on Ed Gein, starring none other than Charlie Hunnam. The resemblance between him and Gein is so striking that it’s like looking at a photograph from another era.
Ryan Murphy, a solo powerhouse in the entertainment industry, shared earlier this year that the upcoming season of his popular Netflix series, “Monster”, would delve into the life of infamous serial killer Ed Gein, with Charlie Hunnam taking on the lead role. Recently, we’ve gotten our first glimpse of Hunnam as Gein, and the resemblance is so striking that it left us doubting if it wasn’t an advanced AI duplicate instead.
Netflix recently posted some photos taken by Backgrid (as shown below), featuring Hunnam wearing a flannel that resembles Gein’s signature style, and sporting a close-cropped haircut with a side part that resembles the hairstyle often seen in pictures of The Butcher of Plainfield after his arrest in 1957. For Season 3, the Netflix series is being referred to as The Original Monster. In addition, Vicky Krieps can also be seen in these photos wearing a luxurious yellow dress with a cowl neck. Known for her roles in movies like M. Night Shyamalan’s “Old” and the 2017 critically acclaimed film “Phantom Thread”, her part in the series has not yet been revealed.
In the upcoming season, actress Laurie Metcalf, known from “Roseanne,” will play Gein’s mother, Augusta. Additionally, Tom Hollander and Olivia Williams are set to portray Alfred Hitchcock and his wife, Alma Reville. This implies that the series, “The Original Monster,” will not only delve into the gruesome deeds of Gein but also explore how he became a part of popular culture, largely due to Hitchcock, who transformed Robert Block’s 1959 novel “Psycho” for the silver screen. The movie, loosely based on the serial killer, significantly contributed to his public notoriety.
‘Monster’ Has Been a Huge Hit for Ryan Murphy and Netflix
Introduced in 2022, the debut season of “Monster” primarily centered around Jeffrey Dahmer, a notorious individual who was arrested in 1991 and later discovered to have murdered and dismembered seventeen people spanning over thirteen years. Starring Evan Peters as the main character, this Netflix series quickly gained popularity and eventually became the second most-watched English-language season ever on the streaming platform, with over 700 million hours viewed within its first 21 days. Peters received a Golden Globe Award for his performance, while Niecy Nash was awarded a Primetime Emmy for her portrayal of Glenda Cleavland, Dahmer’s neighbor.
The second part of the anthology series, named “The Lyle and Eric Menendez Story“, didn’t garner as many viewers as “Dahmer” did, but it still found its own audience, largely because of the controversy it generated from the brothers. For instance, Eric criticized it as an “inaccurate portrayal of the events leading up to our crime.” The Menendez brothers were convicted for murdering their parents in 1989 and given life sentences without parole. However, they are scheduled for a re-sentencing trial in January 2025, which might potentially clear their names after more than three decades.
Without a doubt, the series titled “Monster” has been a tremendous success for both Murphy and Netflix. Given that the third season delves into the storyline of one of history’s most notorious serial killers, we anticipate its popularity to endure. Filming is projected to conclude in March of the following year, with a release date announcement expected soon after.
