As a dedicated fan of both cinema and the Marvel universe, I cannot help but be intrigued by the tumultuous journey behind the scenes of Sony Pictures’ Spider-Man Universe films. The recent revelations from director Daniel Espinosa about his experience making “Morbius” resonate deeply with me, as it seems to reflect a common theme among filmmakers working on these projects.

Daniel Espinosa, the director of “Morbius,” has spoken candidly about the film’s disappointing performance in 2022 and expressed his belief that he may not have been the ideal choice for the project. Known primarily for crime thrillers like “Easy Money,” “Safe House,” and “Child 44,” Espinosa’s 2017 film “Life” garnered significant attention due to its production by Sony Pictures, leading some to speculate that it was a secret prequel to “Venom.” However, this proved to be inaccurate, and Espinosa was subsequently appointed to helm “Morbius” in June 2018. Unfortunately, the release of “Morbius” was postponed from 2020 to 2022 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, resulting in a lengthy production process.

After the premiere of “Morbius,” Espinosa has returned to his preferred genre, working on the thrillers “Madame Luna” and “The Helicopter Heist.” In an interview with Deadline, Espinosa shared his experiences making “Morbius,” a film marked by significant production upheavals. According to Espinosa, he butted heads with Sony Pictures over the project, implying that they might have been better off with a different director at the helm.

As a passionate movie fan, I’ve come to realize that creating a film through a committee can be an immense challenge. In hindsight, I believe another director might have been more suited for the project. I’m recognized within the studios as someone who isn’t shy about sharing my opinions. Perhaps they were searching for a director with a different approach.

I was eagerly anticipating the release of Morbius back in summer 2020, but unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic forced theaters to close, pushing the premiere back to March 2021. Yet, even that date didn’t hold as the movie was delayed another three times before finally gracing our screens on April 1, 2022. To my disappointment, Morbius underperformed at the box office and was met with harsh criticism from critics and fans alike. The memes mocking the film, such as “It’s Morbin Time,” gained massive popularity, which Sony inexplicably tried to capitalize on by considering a rerelease of the movie. However, Morbius‘s poor performance at the box office was not a one-time event; it bombed again.

Sony Pictures took advantage of numerous production delays to make changes to the final product of “Morbius.” Originally, trailers showcased Michael Keaton as Adrian Toomes, aka The Vulture, in a scene that was ultimately removed and replaced with a new one. The added post-credits scene featuring Toomes feels disconnected, seemingly inserted to fit with the ending of “Spider-Man: No Way Home.” Several subplots from “Morbius” were eliminated, and an image of Spider-Man seen in trailers was cut from the final version of the film. The only mention of Spider-Man remains in a conversation between Morbius and Toomes towards the end of the movie.

Espinosa’s experience with “Morbius” aligns with many filmmakers working on Sony Marvel films. S.J. Clarkson allegedly faced numerous studio adjustments and retakes for “Madame Web,” a movie that bombed both commercially and critically, even more so than “Morbius.” Although no issues have been disclosed regarding J.C. Chandor’s “Kraven the Hunter,” it has encountered several release date changes. Initially scheduled to debut in January 2023, the film was then moved to October 2023 due to unspecified reasons. Subsequently, the SAG-AFTRA strike forced another delay to August 2024. Most recently, the studio postponed the release yet again, this time to December 2024, just a few months before its initial premiere.

From my gaming perspective, I’ve noticed that Sony hasn’t quite nailed down the Spider-Man universe outside of collaborations with Marvel Studios in recent times. Movies like “Venom” and “Spider-Verse” are exceptions, but otherwise, things have been rocky for them. The upcoming projects, such as “Kraven the Hunter” and “Venom: The Last Dance,” could either save or sink Sony’s Spider-Man universe.
