As a cinephile who’s witnessed the rise and fall of many silver screen titans, I can’t help but admire the unapologetic candor of Jared Harris. His career trajectory is a testament to the ebb and flow of Hollywood, with roles that span from Emmy-nominated performances to box office flops like Morbius – a film he took on to pay his mortgage.
Renowned actor Jared Harris has enjoyed an unquestionably prestigious career, earning Emmy nominations for his roles in Mad Men and Chernobyl, as well as supporting roles alongside Robert Downey Jr. in Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. However, the star has faced some setbacks in the movie industry, most notably with his portrayal of Dr. Emil Nicholas in the box office disappointment, a Spider-Man spin-off that Harris himself has admitted was taken on to meet financial obligations.
Ever since its release in 2022, the Internet has developed a peculiar mix of affection and criticism towards the film Morbius. Despite being a Marvel property, it’s become infamous for its poor critical reception and weak box office earnings – something that Harris seems to be well-versed in. In an interview with the U.K.’s iNews, Harris jokingly admitted that he took on the role in Morbius solely to cover his mortgage payments.
Given that I have a mortgage to take care of, I find myself accepting opportunities to earn money at times.
As a film critic, I must admit that it comes as a surprise to hear such financial struggles disclosed by an actor of such acclaimed standing. Yet, the current economic climate has left many of us grasping for additional income sources, and it seems that not even BAFTA and Emmy-nominated performers are immune to these financial pressures.
Besides keeping quiet about his thoughts on why Morbius failed, Harris didn’t hesitate to express his views. Considering the numerous memes generated after Morbius was released, it appears that Harris’s hypothesis – the film might have garnered more popularity if it hadn’t been so serious – seems spot-on accurate.
He pointed out that comedic films tend to be successful when they’re viewed with a touch of humor. It’s not like reading Shakespeare; instead, it requires a playful perspective. Therefore, the movie might have benefited from a more light-hearted, mischievous approach.
Jared Harris Has Zero Interest in Joining the Harry Potter Reboot
Thankfully, it appears the actor has avoided significant negative impact following Morbius’ disappointing performance at the box office. Lately, he’s been drawing attention due to his firm stance on not returning to play his father’s role in the forthcoming HBO Harry Potter spin-off series. The late Richard Harris brought warmth and a hint of mischief to the character of Albus Dumbledore in the first two Harry Potter films, which were his final roles. However, Jared Harris has not only declined to pick up where his father left off, but he’s also been vocal about his opposition to a Harry Potter reboot. But could his stance change as financial obligations increase? According to The Independent, Harris recently stated:
Thank you, but I’ll pass. To be honest, I’m puzzled as to the reason for changing something that was already excellent – the movies were terrific, let them be.
In terms of my future projects, I’m thrilled to be part of the talented cast directed by the esteemed Kathryn Bigelow in her upcoming Netflix movie. This film revolves around the White House staff as they grapple with the looming threat of a missile attack on our nation.
