‘More Money, More Problems Is Real.’ Terrifier 3’s Director Gets Real About Having Way More Than $250,000 To Work With This Time

'More Money, More Problems Is Real.' Terrifier 3's Director Gets Real About Having Way More Than $250,000 To Work With This Time

As a seasoned horror enthusiast and someone who has witnessed the evolution of indie filmmaking, I can wholeheartedly appreciate the struggles Damien Leone faced while transitioning from his DIY roots to the big leagues with Terrifier 3. The journey he embarked on is reminiscent of a rollercoaster ride – exhilarating at times, nerve-wracking at others, and always unpredictable.

Upcoming horror film “Terrifier 3” is already causing quite a stir – not just heads but also the queasiness of viewers – due to Damien Leone’s latest serving of unyielding brutality. This third chapter in the terrifying horror series left an indelible impression at Fantastic Fest in September and is now ready to plunge a hatchet into the movie lineup for 2024. The film doesn’t hesitate to push limits from its grisly, contentious opening scene, showcasing a budget that significantly outweighs its predecessor’s $250,000 budget while maintaining an independent spirit. However, as we learned from The Notorious B.I.G., with greater resources come greater challenges.

In a frank conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Leone openly talked about the advantages and disadvantages that come with his recent financial independence. Known for constructing his career using a homemade, self-reliant strategy, he didn’t shy away from sharing his feelings about transitioning into larger-scale filmmaking. (Feel free to check out our review of Terrifier 3 here!) As the director revealed to the magazine:

This project was both simpler and more challenging than any I’ve tackled before, largely due to its complexity and the sheer number of people involved. The adage “more money, more problems” certainly held true here, with an unprecedented number of individuals – in front of, behind, and off-camera – demanding my attention. Juggling so many different perspectives was tough, as I was constantly answering questions from various departments filled with numerous crew members. To top it off, we had to finish this film in a significantly shorter period of time. Once the countdown began, there was no stopping; it felt like a speeding train I was trying to catch up to, making crucial decisions under pressure as the money kept flowing.

Initially, it might appear that a filmmaker’s dream has been realized by gaining additional funding. However, as Damien noted, this increased financial support also brings along its own challenges. With more funds comes the need for more team members, more departments, and consequently, more choices to be made.

In terms of the independent feel of the initial two movies in the horror marathon series, Leone enjoyed a leisurely pace – a luxury that was lost when he transitioned into the higher-budget realm. To put it simply, his creative process became more time-constrained as he ventured into bigger productions.

For the other two movies, they felt quite DIY (Do-It-Yourself). We worked on them at our leisure without any deadlines looming over us. No one was pressuring us with release dates. It’s important to note that I’m not implying this as a criticism, but rather stating the reality of the situation. This lack of pressure allowed me approximately a year to write the script, film, and edit the movie for a particular release date. However, my advice would be to avoid such tight schedules when making a film. This approach simply happened to be suitable for this project.

The director, formerly a master of special effects, shares insights that provide a unique glimpse into the world of a filmmaker’s delicate act of blending enthusiasm with practicality. One major challenge in creating Terrifier 3 was the tight timeline, as edits were still being finalized on the movie during its global debut’s very afternoon. However, it wasn’t all gloom and despair.

Leone emphasized that on this occasion, he had an exceptional group of people, notably Christien Tinsley’s skilled makeup effects team, backing him. If you recall, Tinsley’s artistry has graced projects ranging from “The Passion of the Christ” to “Westworld”. The director noted:

However, it’s worth noting that Christien Tinsley’s exceptional makeup effects team eased a significant load for me during the Terrifier 2 production. This allowed me to devote more time and energy to various aspects of filmmaking, which I believe contributed to my growth as a director in the long run. I was able to spend more quality time with the actors, and collaborate closely with my cinematographer, George Steuber, throughout each day. As a result, greater care was taken in areas that may have been compromised slightly in previous films due to my focus on makeup effects.

Leone’s journey in the film industry serves as a reminder of potential hurdles faced by directors venturing into major productions. Although a larger budget opens up new opportunities, it also presents fresh difficulties that may seem daunting. The making of Terrifier 3 has demonstrated to be the director’s toughest challenge so far. Despite appreciating the extra resources, it’s evident that managing large-scale projects comes with its own set of challenges.

With the approaching release of horror movie “Terrifier 3” in cinemas, it’s evident that director Damien Leone has successfully preserved the grisly, contentious essence of the series, despite dealing with larger budgets and stricter deadlines. Given its expanding fanbase, the Terrifying Clown saga shows no signs of abating anytime soon.
