More Witcher Spin-Offs Confirmed: What to Expect Next!

It appears that Netflix’s hit series, “The Witcher,” may conclude after its upcoming two seasons, yet showrunner Lauren S. Hissrich continues to envision expanding the franchise with additional spin-offs. Originating from Andrzej Sapkowski’s popular fantasy novels, “The Witcher” premiered on Netflix in 2019, with Henry Cavill portraying Geralt of Rivia, a mercenary hunter of monsters. Despite Cavill returning for two more seasons, he departed the show following Season 3 due to creative disagreements. Liam Hemsworth is set to replace Cavill in the final two seasons, with the first season expected to be released next year. To date, the franchise has seen both live-action (“Blood Origins”) and animated (“Nightmare of the Wolf”) spin-offs, albeit with varying levels of success. However, Hissrich remains optimistic about the future of the franchise despite the inconsistencies in its past endeavors.

In a conversation with SFX Magazine (through Redanian Intelligence), Lauren S. Hissrich shared that there are multiple additional stories set within the universe of “The Witcher” currently being developed. Expressing her deep affection for this world, she stated, “I’m always seeking new ways to broaden this world beyond the main series.” Having previously worked as an executive producer on shows like “Daredevil” and “The Umbrella Academy“, Hissrich disclosed that these spin-offs have been in the works long before the show premiered six years ago. She further added:

– “I adore this world, I’m always looking for new chances to grow it beyond the primary series.”
– “This universe of ‘The Witcher‘ is vast, and I can’t wait to explore more of it through these spin-offs.”
– “As a fan of this world myself, I’m constantly searching for opportunities to delve deeper into its lore with the spin-offs.

As a movie critic, I’ll always cherish the moment when Kelly Luegenbiehl, then a Netflix executive, collaborated with me on a groundbreaking series. It was roughly a month prior to its Netflix debut, and I found myself sharing my ideas for spin-offs with her. Her response, ever the pragmatist, was, “That’s interesting. Let’s wait and see if the show resonates with audiences first.” Indeed, uncertainty is always part of the creative process.

One aspect that Lauren S. Hissrich is keen on emphasizing in the upcoming spin-offs is the well-received female characters from the franchise. “This is something I feel strongly about, and it comes as no surprise,” she said. “I believe these characters resonated with a large number of people who may have felt underrepresented or excluded in fantasy shows before.” The portrayal of women in the fantasy genre has historically been insufficient, but Sapkowski’s books and Netflix’s adaptation have garnered praise for featuring strong female characters.

‘The Witcher’s Next Spin-Off Releases Next Month

Hissrich hasn’t disclosed substantial details about her upcoming spin-offs yet. However, we won’t have to wait long as “The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep” is set to premiere on Netflix on February 11. This animated film features several original cast members from the main series reprising their roles, including Joey Batey as Jaskier and Anya Chalotra as Yennefer. Instead of Henry Cavill, Doug Cockle will be back to voice Geralt of Rivia, having previously voiced the character in all three of CD Projekt Red’s “The Witcher” video games.

The story “A Little Sacrifice” from Sapkowski’s book The Sword of Destiny, is the basis for the adaptation called “Sirens of the Deep“. In this tale, Geralt, a mutant monster hunter hired to investigate attacks on a coastal village, discovers an age-old feud between humans and sea creatures that could potentially lead to war among kingdoms. To prevent this conflict from escalating, Geralt relies on his allies to unravel the mystery behind these events.
