At the behest of entrepreneur and art aficionado Dakis Joannou, Manhattan Projects NYC (MPNYC) has transformed the ambiance of Athens eatery Koumkan into a captivating, dreamlike environment.

With guidance from businessman and art enthusiast Dakis Joannou, Manhattan Projects NYC (MPNYC) has revamped the setting of Athens restaurant Koumkan to create an enchanting, immersive atmosphere.
The restaurant at Semiramis Hotel in Kifisia resembles its bold exterior as it welcomes guests with a grand travertine archway and a reflective door, hinting at the vibrant designs within. In the soft-toned lobby, two travertine walls, beautifully symmetrical like pages of a book, face mirrors on opposite walls, giving an expansive impression. Additionally, the flow of wall-to-wall carpeting provides a warm texture to the overall design scheme.
Behind a secret mirror door, the parlor is adorned from floor to ceiling in dramatic emerald marble sourced from the Greek island of Tinos. This marble embellishes the high-top banquettes, shelves, DJ booth, bar, and even footrests. The room’s lighting comes from vintage 1960s sconces that resemble flutes and are made of stainless steel. These fixtures softly illuminate the emerald marble surfaces, creating an ambiance that led to the installation of a custom horizontal chandelier hanging above the bar.
The principal attraction is the grand hall, a clever blend of a lounge, cocktail bar, and restaurant, creating an illusion of height. Above the open seating area, vertical mirrors amplify the space and reflect the soft radiance of the integrated lighting. Down below, curved bench seating adorned with pink moire-like fabric coexists with plush rounded armchairs and round marble tables. Tropical plants lend a natural touch to the pink motif throughout, tying the interior to the outdoor veranda spaces.
The veranda, linking the restaurant with the pool deck, serves as a unique indoor/outdoor lounge space, partially shielded yet open to both worlds. It also provides an additional source of natural light for the interior. The pink terracotta walls and intricate pink travertine floor tiles, arranged in a herringbone pattern, gently filter sunlight into the area, creating a soft, inviting glow. Lastly, chrome chairs with a polished finish and tables reminiscent of 1950s Mediterranean Riviera design, add a touch of elegance and shine to the overall stone-toned aesthetic.
