As a movie buff who has had the privilege of growing up with the golden age of 90s cinema, I can confidently say that the addition of Robin Williams’ comedic masterpieces, Mrs. Doubtfire and Jumanji, to Tubi’s library is a cause for celebration. These movies hold a special place in my heart, as they were part of my formative years, filling countless evenings with laughter and wonder.
Fans of the legendary actor, William, can now stream two of his iconic ’90s comedies on Tubi. These beloved films are considered some of his finest work, and thanks to Tubi’s addition to their library, a new generation gets the chance to appreciate his talent at no cost.
1993 saw Robin Williams delivering one of his finest comedic performances in Mrs. Doubtfire, portraying Daniel, a divorcee who assumes the role of a nanny to gain access to his kids. Despite some claiming the film is outdated, it’s challenging not to view it as a side-splitting, and at times emotional, tale illustrating just how far a parent might go to stay connected with their children. On the other hand, 1995’s Jumanji offers an exhilarating adventure comedy, where Williams plays Alan Parrish, a man imprisoned within a board game for decades, who is finally freed when another family unwittingly activates the game. However, it isn’t just Alan that emerges from the game, as the dangerous jungle of Jumanji begins to encroach upon reality.
Both films by Williams were massive successes upon their debut, and have since become iconic in pop culture references over the years. Notably, Mrs. Doubtfire is frequently imitated and quoted across various movies and TV programs, whereas Jumanji eventually led to a sequel, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (2017), which also had a sequel, Jumanji: The Next Level (2019). A third installment, Jumanji: The Next Adventure, is scheduled for release in 2026. Although Mrs. Doubtfire did not receive a follow-up, it remains part of the legacy of one of the most renowned comedic actors in history.
Robin Williams’ Legacy Continues
It’s been a full decade since Robin Williams sadly passed away, causing quite a stir among his fans and leaving behind an impressive cinematic legacy. His career spanned from humorous roles in shows like “Mork & Mindy,” to voice acting in Disney classics such as “Aladdin” and “Happy Feet.” He also gave memorable dramatic performances in films like “Dead Poets Society” and “The Fisher King.” Essentially, Robin Williams’ diverse body of work offers something for every movie enthusiast.
Despite the challenge for many studios to carry on with IPs associated with Williams due to his unique energy, Disney found a way around it by having Will Smith take on the role of the Genie in their live-action remake of Aladdin. Although there were criticisms that Smith wasn’t like Robin Williams, he didn’t aim to imitate him. Instead, he brought a different interpretation of the character, one that Williams had made difficult to replicate due to his exceptional performance.
Undoubtedly, a moment will arrive when some of Williams’ iconic films might fall prey to the persistent trend of remakes in Hollywood. Yet, regardless of these potential reimaginings, there will always be the timeless originals ready for fans to revisit.
