Scott Matthews has been named senior vice president of newsgathering at MSNBC.
Matthews has recently transitioned to his current position, having served as both Vice President and News Director at WABC-TV. In this role, he managed the Eyewitness News team and supervised the development and management of their streaming and digital services. Prior to this, from 2011 to 2019, Matthews held the position of Vice President of News Specials at CNBC. During his tenure there, he was responsible for spearheading special programming, such as breaking news, special events, and CNBC’s Investigative Unit.
Matthews starts at MSNBC on March 17 and will report to MSNBC President Rebecca Kutler.
As a dedicated enthusiast, I’m thrilled to announce that I’ve been entrusted with the task of shaping and managing the editorial and production newsgathering operation at MSNBC. This exciting role involves creating a cutting-edge assignment desk, overseeing daily news coverage as well as breaking news events, and much more! I can’t wait to get started!
Matthews is intending to recruit over a hundred journalists, encompassing field producers, correspondents, photographers, and others. In response, Comcast is readying to separate MSNBC, alongside other assets, while NBC News continues with the main company. This means that MSNBC needs to expand its news-gathering capabilities independently.
As a dedicated fan, I’m thrilled to share that Kutler is setting up an MSNBC bureau right here in our nation’s capital, Washington D.C. This move signals the hiring of both domestic and international correspondents, as well as a head who will strategize talent and content. Previously announced hires include Eugene Daniels from Politico, now serving as a senior Washington correspondent and co-host of The Weekend, and Jackie Alemany from The Washington Post, who’ll be a correspondent and co-host on the same show. Can’t wait to see what these new additions will bring!
Matthews had previously held the position of director for CNN Productions, overseeing the documentary series CNN Presents and CNN’s Special Investigations Unit. Additionally, he worked as a vice president and news director at various television stations including WNYW-TV and WWOR-TV in New York City, WTXF-TV in Philadelphia, and WFXT-TV in Boston. He also served as the executive producer for investigative reporting at WNYW-TV in New York and KNXV-TV in Phoenix.
