MSNBC Reportedly Thinks Lost Viewers Will Return In January, But I’ve Got Some Concerns

As a seasoned gamer who’s navigated countless virtual worlds and survived more than a few epic battles, I can tell you that the current state of MSNBC feels like a tough level boss I just can’t seem to beat. The rumors of a spinoff and potential sale have me on the edge of my seat, much like when I’m waiting for that sneaky boss to make his move.

At this moment, MSNBC is facing some turbulent times. There’s speculation about a potential spin-off and possible sale following NBC’s separation from its other properties. The public discourse has been quite active regarding Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski meeting with President Trump, but what’s most troubling is the network’s ratings decline since the election, which have been dismal.

Man, I can’t help but rub this in a little – it seems like Rachel Maddow and Morning Joe are having their worst times yet. According to The Independent and The Daily Mail, they’ve both lost viewers big time, even to reruns of Bob’s Burgers on Adult Swim! And get this, MSNBC has almost halved its total viewers since the election! Can you believe it? Fox News is already celebrating with a press release that highlights how some of their rival shows have hit record lows since then.

Despite the challenging recent weeks, some people remain hopeful based on historical patterns following elections. Networks that are perceived to favor a particular ideology often experience lower ratings shortly after an election if their preferred party doesn’t win. For instance, MSNBC saw a drop in viewership following President Trump’s 2016 victory and Fox News experienced a similar decline post-President Biden’s 2020 win. A representative from MSNBC is said to have anticipated this dip after the election, believing that ratings will bounce back once President Trump is officially inaugurated post-holidays.

But will enough people return? I’ve got some concerns.

As a gamer, I’ve been finding solace in stepping away from the constant stream of news lately, especially with its overwhelming negativity. It’s just too much for me to handle right now, and I’m not alone – many other liberal-leaning voters feel the same way. The world seems to be in a state of turmoil, and we’re fed up with the rollercoaster of daily highs and lows. It’s human nature to want to escape from such situations sometimes.

Previously, we’ve traversed this path, but it’s possible that reactions towards another Trump presidency might differ from the initial one. Many of his latest Cabinet selections have sparked significant controversy, yet this hasn’t translated into increased interest. Even a program like Saturday Night Live, which was deeply involved with Trump in 2016, may moderate its political focus to some extent in the future.

It’s worth noting that American viewers are generally less inclined towards cable news networks compared to 2016 levels. This shift is significant because it was just last year when the number of households relying on streaming services exceeded those who use cable and satellite for the first time. This trend is expected to continue, with fewer people having access to MSNBC in particular.

Additionally, there’s a potential risk that these ratings might lead to a self-perpetuating problem for NBC when it comes to splitting off the network. If a subsidiary encounters hard times, its parent company might adopt a long-term strategy and offer additional or consistent resources to help it recover. However, this isn’t necessarily going to happen at the moment due to all the uncertainties surrounding the situation. It remains uncertain whether NBC intends to sell the business (Elon Musk has made humorous comments about purchasing it), but if they do, they would probably aim to maximize its profitability, which might involve decreasing resources rather than increasing them.

As for MSNBC’s future, it’s uncertain what lies ahead. I predict that ratings might improve slightly after the New Year, but the extent of this improvement remains to be seen. It could follow previous trends, with liberal viewers returning to cable news and specifically, MSNBC once they become more active again. On the other hand, some may choose to stay away, either due to a prolonged disinterest in the news or because they’re exploring newer, more contemporary methods of receiving their news. Only time will tell.
