20 years ago, I was captivated by the magic of Mujhse Shaadi Karogi, a rom-com that continues to enchant me today! The iconic characters, from Akshay Kumar’s Wicked Sunny to Kader Khan’s Duggal Sahab, were brought to life by David Dhawan’s masterful direction.
20 years ago today marks the anniversary of the release of the much-loved romantic comedy “Mujhse Shaadi Karogi,” starring Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar, and Priyanka Chopra, and directed by David Dhawan. Filled with memorable characters like Akshay Kumar’s mischievous Sunny and Kader Khan’s Duggal Sahab, the film remains a favorite among movie enthusiasts for its entertaining package.
Today’s unique moment brings an exciting piece of information about the movie “Mujhse Shaadi Karogi” from the pen of its dialogue writer, Rumi Jaffrey. Let’s dive in!
1. The character of Kader Khan’s Duggal sahab was inspired by a real person
As an obsessed fan, I can’t help but share this intriguing detail from an interview of the legendary actor, Jaffrey, with Indian Express. He unveiled that Duggal sahab, the internet’s beloved meme character, was actually inspired by Rahul Rawail’s father’s cherished friend, fondly known as “Ridku uncle.” This petite man, standing at just 2.5 feet tall, left a lasting impression on Jaffrey. I’m thrilled to add that this remarkable individual made an appearance in not one but two of Rahul Rawail’s films – Mere Mehboob and Mehboob Ki Mehendi.
As Jaffery reminisced about the past while working on Anjaam, Rahul shared an unusual health issue experienced by his uncle. At times, this ailment caused him to open his eyes and find himself blind, while other instances resulted in hearing loss.
In an unexpected turn of events, I was taken aback yet amused. I shared with Rahul that I’d include it in one of my films. He raised an eyebrow, doubting its believability. I countered, “Why not? He’d make a fantastic character in a comedy-drama.” Fast forward several years, and I brought this character to life on the silver screen through Mujhse Shaadi Karogi.
Based on my understanding of the given text, I find it intriguing that Rajpal Yadav’s beloved character was persuasively included in the production of Kick by Sajid Nadiadwala. In fact, before the shoot began, the producer personally called Rajpal and shared that his role would rank third following Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar. He then requested Rajpal to meet Rumi for further details regarding his part. As someone who has worked in the film industry for a while, I can relate to the power dynamics at play here. Producers often bring in actors they have worked with before or those they believe will add value to their project. It’s an interesting insight into how the industry functions behind the scenes.
Yet, when Rajpal phoned Jaffrey, he was puzzled because there wasn’t a part assigned to him. Afterward, he dialed Sajid who said, “All I want is for him to be in the film; it’s up to you now to decide how.”
Rumi went on to explain that there were two parts in the original script: a broker and the rowdy, the head of the Eagle gang. These roles were initially intended for Vindu Dara Singh. However, Rajpal Yadav eventually took on both roles in a double part performance.
Based on my understanding of the text, it seems that Sajid held the idea of Rajpal Yadav being a twin brother to be perfectly suitable for their project, and not only did he approve of this casting choice, but it also brought contentment to Rajpal himself. The situation was undoubtedly demanding, as Rajpal’s exceptional acting skills had led to him being added to the production at the eleventh hour. According to Jaffrey’s account, Rajpal rose to the occasion and delivered a commendable performance despite the late notice and the resulting pressure. As someone who has experienced the unpredictability of the entertainment industry myself, I can empathize with both Sajid and Rajpal – the thrill of last-minute additions to projects and the relief that comes from successfully rising to the challenge.
1) Rumi confessed his fascination for pugs ever since Chalte Chalte, yet he wasn’t able to incorporate a real one in that movie. Instead, he included it in MSK, but the original dog in the film was “advanced in years” and passed away during production. Subsequently, they introduced another dog resembling the first and finished filming with that replacement.
In an interview with Bollywood Hungama, Jaffrey shared that since he had previously worked with the legendary Amrish Puri, he was familiar with his “way of thinking” and recognized him as a highly respected actor in the industry. However, Sajid and David Dhawan were considering other actors for the role, but Jaffrey strongly advocated for Puri to be cast instead.
1. Sajid and David considered him to be an incredibly talented actor, and the author exclaimed, “This is going to be the star of the show! People will wonder, ‘Who played the part of the football player? Who portrayed the role of the slapped character? It was Amrish ji!'”
Using the instance of Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’s success, Amrish explained that his stern persona added to the intrigue among fans. He believed that his image would significantly contribute to the movie as well. “He had worked with such dedication!” he exclaimed, reminiscing about Puri’s decision for the film.
