Mulroney Surprised Fans Still Love His Friends Role!

Dermot Mulroney has had a successful acting journey, spanning films (from beloved ’90s hits like “Angels in the Outfield” to contemporary romantic comedies such as “Anyone but You”) and television (where he’s been captivating audiences in his role as a chief on “Chicago Fire,” set to air in 2025). However, when it comes to roles that have made him most recognizable, Mulroney points out his guest appearance on “Friends.” This is quite amusing given that two of his major films feature actors from the same show.

Dermot Mulroney Gets Recognized As Gavin From Friends

During its decade-long span, Friends showcased several top-notch guest stars. In Season 9, Dermot Mulroney portrayed Gavin Mitchell in a three-episode arc. When Rachel (played by Jennifer Aniston) was on maternity leave, Gavin temporarily took her place. As Rachel battled to reclaim her job, she found herself growing fond of him. (It’s fascinating how unproblematic that storyline appears to be.) Mulroney recently appeared on The Jennifer Hudson Show, where he discussed his role in one of television’s finest sitcoms, expressing:

In simpler terms, I have a minor role in a big production, but one character really stood out – it felt almost like he was real! And as more people watched it repeatedly, that character seemed even more alive. You know, before we had comfort shows, but now we do. It’s sort of a new concept, where rewatching a series, like Friends, from the start gives it an entirely new life.

Dermot Mulroney clearly resonates with me through his repeated viewing of “Friends” (all ten seasons are available for streaming with a Max subscription), and he playfully suggested that the top three episodes were the ones he appeared in, which is only natural.

The part was undeniably entertaining, as Gavin proved to be a formidable adversary for both Rachel initially and later Ross (after witnessing their kiss on the balcony). It’s quite amusing how that character left such an enduring impression on viewers. The actor went on to say:

In an unusual turn of events, I found myself in a peculiar situation where strangers were calling out my name, Gavin, at a gas station. It had been quite some time since this occurred. Interestingly, when the show Friends resurfaced on streaming platforms, I became strikingly recognizable due to actions from two decades ago, before that point.

I find it quite hard to picture the sensation of being unexpectedly scolded by a stranger, even if it’s praise, over an incident from my job two decades past. It certainly seems strange and unreal.

Apart from his roles in the sitcom that garnered him recognition, some of his most notable films are also linked back to the television series.

While he’s recognized for many roles, including those in the sitcom, it’s interesting to note that several of his significant movies can be traced back to the TV series as well.

Two Of Dermot Mulroney’s Best Films Star Friends Actors

Without a doubt, my preferred movie starring Dermot Mulroney is none other than “My Best Friend’s Wedding.” In this delightful romantic comedy, Julia Roberts delivers one of her finest performances as she tries to prevent her best friend Michael (Mulroney) from marrying Kimmy (Cameron Diaz). However, their collaboration in “My Best Friend’s Wedding” isn’t the only time these two talented actors have worked together. In fact, they also appeared on the hit sitcom “Friends.

In Season 2, Julia Robert’s character didn’t meet on the set with the rest of the cast because she joined as Susie (also known as “Susie Underpants”), a role she took up in the episode titled “The One After the Super Bowl.” This character sought retribution from Matthew Perry’s character, Chandler, for a childhood prank that earned her the nickname.

If you’re a fan of Friends and want to watch all ten seasons, consider subscribing to Max. For just $9.99 per month, you can sign up for the With Ads plan, with three subscription tiers available. Plus, by prepaying for a year, you could save up to 20%. Is this deal any better? Check it out here: View Deal

Many viewers might identify Dermot Mulroney from the more contemporary “Scream 6”, and although I won’t disclose any details about this fantastic addition to the legendary horror series, it’s evident that actress Courteney Cox, famously known for her role in “Friends”, has portrayed Gale Weathers in every Scream movie.

Dermot Mulroney made a significant impact despite appearing in just three episodes of “Friends.” It’s intriguing to note that his acting journey has led him to collaborate with other cast members from the series on different projects.
