Although NetEase’s game similar to Overwatch, Marvel Rivals, is currently popular, Warner Bros. Game’s MultiVersus, which resembles Smash, from Player First Games, has faced some challenges since its release.
As an ardent admirer, I’ve been eagerly anticipating the launch of MultiVersus, but it seems that the studio behind it, Warner Bros., has decided to discontinue the game. Regrettably, it appears that the title will be removed from circulation by May.
MultiVersus Shutting Down
On its previous platform, now known as X, the official MultiVersus account has officially announced that Season 5 will mark the end of updates. Here’s the message they shared:
[Message from MultiVersus Official Account]
“Hey MultiVersers! We wanted to share some exciting news with you all. After much thought and consideration, we’ve decided that Season 5 will be the final update for MultiVersus. We can’t thank you enough for your support and passion throughout our journey so far. Stay tuned for more details about what’s in store for Season 5, and remember to keep fighting!
– The MultiVersus Team
Beyond the main post, the official blog offers further clarification about the thought process leading up to this choice.
We didn’t arrive at this decision casually… The teams at Player First Games and Warner Bros Games have poured their heart and spirit into the development of MultiVersus. We’ve crafted an exceptional social and cooperative experience from scratch, merging a diverse array of beloved characters and universes.
We’re extremely pleased with the game we’ve constructed, and we can’t express enough gratitude to the MultiVersus community for their backing during our journey. Your dedication and excitement are simply unprecedented.”
“We’re really proud of the game we’ve created and can’t thank the MultiVersus community enough for their support throughout this journey. The level of passion and enthusiasm you’ve shown is unparalleled.
By now, it seems like new content acquisitions are no longer available. It’s recommended that players use their Gleamium (the in-game currency) before the season ends on May 30. After this date, players can only enjoy MultiVersus offline, battling against AI or up to four friends.
How to Play MultiVersus Offline
To play MultiVersus without an internet connection, it’s essential that players update their game to its latest version first. Then, logging in during Season 5 will generate a save file that links with your launcher’s network (such as PSN, Microsoft Store, or Steam). This link enables offline access to all the content you’ve earned and bought.
No Refunds
Due to the in-game currency becoming outdated within a few months, some gamers have inquired about receiving a refund for the money they invested into the game. However, the developers have stated that they regrettably cannot grant these refunds.
What are the Fans Saying?
Despite falling short of WB Games’ anticipated figures, many online commentators recognized the game’s potential, as it stood out among the top Smash-style games available.
Some gamers find it frustrating that the creators haven’t provided immediate access to all in-game cosmetics when the online service shuts down, leaving them with no means to fully compile their game collection according to what they understand.
As long as the game “MultiVersus” remains active until May, it might be worthwhile for fans to start petitions, encouraging the developers to make all characters accessible once the game goes live online. Since the game will eventually shut down, there’s not much left for the developers or Warner Bros. to risk.
It’s unfortunate that MultiVersus didn’t reach the heights of success it potentially could have, but perhaps another studio can leverage Warner Bros.’ extensive intellectual property in the gaming realm. Although an Overwatch-like game might be too far-fetched, there seems to be a niche for a platformer similar to Astro Bot or Mario Odyssey, featuring characters from Warner Bros.’ library instead.
There are only so many genres to pick from.
In a natural and easy-to-read manner: The fifth season of MultiVersus starts on February 4 and continues until May 30. Currently, the game can be played on PC, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4/5 platforms.
