As a gamer with a heart for global issues, I find the KLABU Clubhouse project by MVRDV absolutely inspiring! Having spent countless hours in virtual worlds, I can only imagine how powerful real-life connections can be, especially for those displaced from their homes.
International design studio MVRDV recently revealed a versatile, modular clubhouse tailored for the Amsterdam-based social initiative KLABU (meaning “club” in Swahili). This organization empowers refugees by offering them the opportunity to revitalize their spirit and happiness through sports activities.
The construction process kicks off using a simple shipping container as its base, given a vibrant coat of orange and sky blue paint and adorned with a prominent KLABU logo, crafted through laser cutting for high visibility. A modification has been made to open one side, which includes adjustable doors, creating a spacious public-facing window, a protective canopy, and accommodating a large television screen. Inside, you’ll find sports gear and clothing stored neatly behind the counter. All these items can be transported together in a single container for hassle-free setup.
As a gamer, I’d be thrilled to hang out in this place powered by solar energy, boasting multiple electric car charging spots and offering wireless internet access for more than just sports activities – cultural events, education, you name it! Plus, the robust structure built from shipping containers is perfect for withstanding all sorts of climates at global camping sites.
Today, the United Nations reveals that one out of every 69 individuals (approximately 1.5% of the global population) are currently experiencing forced displacement, which is double the rate observed a decade ago when it was one out of every 125 people. The KLABU Clubhouse stands as a testament to the innovative, human-focused designs required to tackle the escalating issue of displacement caused by international conflicts and climate catastrophes. MRDV’s work on KLABU offers a beacon of hope for refugee camps, providing opportunities for sports activities and, more crucially, fostering social connections among individuals confronting adversity.
You can back KLABU’s endeavors by purchasing items from their vibrant sports apparel line, which features stylish patterned jerseys and hoodies.
