As a connoisseur of art with a penchant for the unconventional and the poignantly beautiful, I find myself utterly captivated by Myrna Quiñonez‘s exhibition, “The Horizon Pulled Me Close.” Born in Sinaloa, Mexico and now residing in Bristol, Quiñonez’s life experiences have undoubtedly shaped her unique artistic perspective.
London’s Beers Gallery is all set to introduce an upcoming exhibition titled “The Horizon Pulled Me Close“, created by Mexican artist Myrna Quiñonez. Born in Sinaloa and currently residing in Bristol, Quiñonez reinterprets familiar yet eerie landscapes through a series of vivid paintings. By blending traditional techniques with a contemporary twist, the artist traverses the evolving ground between memory, technology, and the concept of location.
The exhibit is inspired by various landscapes from the artist’s past – the River Wye, Cornwall’s coastline, and Los Mochis in Sinaloa. However, these specific locations blur into liminal areas that seem to exist simultaneously everywhere and nowhere. These pieces, a blend of fragmentation and harmony, suggest a detachment from nature while also expressing a longing to reconnect with it. At the same time, they reflect our growing digital connection to nature.
Quinonez points out that the horizon line serves a purpose beyond simply separating land from sea; it acts as a bridge, connecting the visible world with the unknown. It invites us to gaze upon an endless expanse that feels both vastly grand and intimately personal, highlighting a distance that is both monumentally far and minutely close.
Quinonez’s work exists in a liminal space between our physical world and the virtual realm, created through skillful manipulation of Photoshop edits and aerial drone photography. This pixel-perfect artistry yearns for the unfiltered, human perspective. As the gallery describes, “The landscape is not merely replicated by traditional methods, enhanced with technology; it’s preserved and idealized, as if the artist were striving to capture, perfect, and inhabit a flawless, idyllic environment.
The Horizon Pulled Me Close will be on view from November 28, 2024 until January 25, 2025.
