As a seasoned gamer with a soft spot for heartwarming rom-coms, I must confess that I find Nancy Meyers‘ revelation about The Holiday quite amusing. Over the years, I’ve watched this movie more times than I can count, and it has become an integral part of my holiday tradition.
If you’ve got “The Holiday” (2006) on your essential holiday movie roster, it turns out that wasn’t Nancy Meyers’ original plan – at least not explicitly!
On a recent episode of the Hollywood Gold podcast, the writer and director expressed that she had never viewed it as a Christmas film throughout her entire life.
She mentioned that the movie is titled “The Holiday” since it features people taking a vacation, but it could have been named similarly even if it took place during summertime. After recently revisiting it, she expressed surprise at how prominent Christmas elements were in the film.
This romantic comedy features Kate Winslet, Cameron Diaz, Jude Law, Jack Black, and the late Eli Wallach. It centers around Amanda, a movie trailer editor in Los Angeles, and Iris, a journalist residing in Surrey, England. In an attempt to escape their tumultuous love lives over the Christmas season, they agree to exchange houses for two weeks. However, fate has other plans as love unexpectedly enters their lives.
Instead of envisioning it as a holiday film you’d watch, “Meyers didn’t initially consider it in that light. He primarily wanted to share the tale of these individuals. He chose Christmas as the setting because it can be isolating. As he mentioned last night while re-watching, all the characters are flawed.
The director of the film titled “It’s Complicated” pointed out that although she considers the character Miles played by Black to be the least damaged, all the characters in the movie are quite damaged.
Instead, as the holidays approached, Meyers explained, “It seemed fitting to tackle those matters then.” Therefore, the idea of creating a holiday-themed film wasn’t about celebrating the season, but rather finding an opportune time to address the issues at hand.
Even though the director of “Something’s Gotta Give” didn’t originally intend it, “The Holiday” somehow managed to become a timeless Christmas favorite for me, a gamer like myself.
