Actress Natasha Lyonne, who has garnered Emmy nominations and praise for performances in “Russian Doll” and “Orange Is the New Black,” was not prepared for the negative reaction that came with her first directorial venture.
The actress is about to direct a project for the first time, namely the sci-fi animated film she co-wrote with another person. Both are also set to appear in this upcoming production. In an interview, Lyonne spoke about the unexpected criticism she encountered regarding the film’s incorporation of artificial intelligence.
The title of the forthcoming movie was initially proposed by Japanese roboticist Masahiro Mori, and it pertains to an occurrence where artificial or digitally-created figures provoke a strange, eerie sensation in those observing them. Known as “Uncanny Valley,” this film will delve into the story of a teenager whose connection with reality starts to fray when she becomes overly immersed in a widely-popular augmented reality video game.
In her directorial debut, Lyonne’s work combined elements, sparking some controversy online. However, the actress defended its ethical use, stating that it’s about preserving the rights of artists and facing the impending tide of artificial intelligence head-on.
In simpler terms, the main character from Poker Face clarified that the movie isn’t about artificial intelligence, but they did employ AI technology for tasks such as expanding sets. Yet, when it was learned that their film incorporates AI, the internet community showed initial skepticism.
In my opinion, it’s quite amusing how quickly people jump to misinterpret headlines due to our peculiar society that lacks sufficient reading skills. To address the criticism I faced, I was astonishingly labeled as a bizarre Darth Vader-like character, which is utterly preposterous! Nevertheless, I remain grateful.
She went on to clarify that she had never encountered such criticism. “I’ve never been subjected to something like this before. It can be quite intimidating for those who haven’t experienced it. It’s definitely not pleasant when people speak unkind words. It tends to make one grow up a bit.
Lyonne expressed her gratitude for her success by saying, “I’m deeply thankful for where I am today because I’ve walked on both sides of the Hollywood tracks and trust me, it’s a lot harder on the other side. You keep calling your agent only to hear they aren’t producing films at the moment. And you think, ‘But I’ve seen those movie posters, ma’am. It can’t be true! It’s acceptable to acknowledge that perhaps they don’t want me for the role.’
Poker Face Impressed the Critics Again
Despite continuing work on her directorial venture “Uncanny Valley,” Jillian Leyonne’s latest project is the second season of the Rian Johnson series, “Poker Face.” In this show, Leyonne returns as Charlie Cale, a casino worker known for her exceptional skill in spotting lies. The first and subsequent seasons have garnered favorable reviews from critics.
Over time, as more opinions rolled in, Season 2 maintained an impressive rating of 90%. Yet, viewers seemed to have a different perspective, scoring the season a relatively low 58% on the Popcornmeter. But there’s still a chance for improvement, as Poker Face has only two episodes left before its finale on June 12, Episode 8.
Poker Face is streaming on Peacock.
