Nathan Fillion Reveals Why He Insisted on the Iconic Bowl Cut for Green Lantern!

Following his roles as Hal Jordan in multiple animated DC films set within the DC Animated Movie Universe, Nathan Fillion is gearing up to breathe life into another Green Lantern character. Known for his role on “Castle,” Fillion will portray Guy Gardner in James Gunn’s “Superman.” In the comics, Gardner was the second human inducted into the Green Lantern Corps. Renowned for his bold personality and distinctive hairstyles, details about how his bowl cut was chosen for the DCU version have been shared by Fillion himself.

There’s no ambiguity, Fillion was firmly in the “Bowl Cut” camp during the production of the upcoming DC movie. He expressed this during an appearance on the DC Studios Showcase Official Podcast, sharing his thoughts about choosing a wig for Superman:

“There was no doubt in my mind, I wanted that iconic bowl cut look for Superman. When we were deciding on the right wig for the role, it was clear that the bowl cut was the only choice.

There was discussion on various hair styles to choose from. Everyone had their preferred options. However, I firmly advocated for the bowl cut throughout. It’s finalized, it’s decided. I warned, “If we don’t opt for a bowl cut, there will be repercussions.

Despite sporting various hairdos in comic books, Guy Gardner’s iconic bowl cut from the ’80s, especially during his tenure on the Justice League International, remains memorable. Although this style might not be trendy in today’s 2020s fashion, Nathan Fillion strongly preferred it. He expressed concern that a different choice could spark fan disapproval. Fortunately, James Gunn, who jointly manages DC Studios, shared the same viewpoint, leading to yet another significant decision for the DC Universe.

In fact, it’s been clarified that the hair you see on Nathan Fillion in Superman isn’t his real hair. When asked about growing his own locks, Fillion mentioned that his commitment to The Roke doesn’t allow him to do so at this time.

Currently, I’m juggling another job, where my considerate supervisor is flexible about my involvement in various projects. However, I believe there might be a boundary when it comes to my appearance transforming into that of a bowl-cut police officer.

Absolutely, I concur with his viewpoint. It would indeed be quite jarring if John Nolan, a character from The Rookie, were to start apprehending criminals with a bowl cut, and especially a blonde one. The wig, in this case, seems like the more suitable option, and it will certainly remain a prominent feature. Following Superman’s release, Fillion will reprise his role as Guy Gardner alongside Isabela Merced’s Hawkgirl and Sean Gunn’s Maxwell Lord in Peacemaker Season 2, set to premiere on August 21 on Max. After that, Fillion’s Guy will return for Lanterns, which is projected to air on HBO sometime in early 2026.

In simple terms, Superman will be appearing in the movie lineup of 2025 on July 11th. But if you can’t wait that long, delve into the DC Universe right away! The first season of Creature Commandos is available for streaming with a Max subscription.
