Nava Mau, Laverne Cox Celebrate Historic Nomination With Emotional Embrace

As a dedicated fan who has been following the journey of transgender representation in Hollywood, I cannot help but feel a surge of emotions seeing Nava Mau and Laverne Cox embracing each other on the Emmys red carpet. Ten years ago, Laverne made history as the first openly transgender person to be nominated for an acting Emmy, and now here we are, celebrating Nava as the fourth and the first Latina trans nominee in this category.

Newborn Reindeer, or Nava Mau, enthusiastically expressed her heartfelt joy upon receiving her groundbreaking Emmy nomination on the glamorous red carpet.

On the 2024 Emmys red carpet for E!’s broadcast, Laverne Cox found herself moved by emotion as she warmly hugged Mau during their conversation.

Cox, noticeably emotional, assured Mau, ‘I’m meant to stay composed since I’m the one hosting.’ He expressed, ‘This show is simply astounding, and the efforts you put in are nothing short of remarkable.’

This year’s show sees Mau receiving a nomination for Best Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Movie, making her the initial Latina trans nominee in this category. Previously, Cox had been the first openly transgender actress to be Emmy-nominated for her role in Orange is the New Black.

A decade ago, I was the trailblazer as the first openly transgender actor to receive an Emmy nomination, and now, another 10 years have passed, and you’re not only the fourth but also the first in your specific category,” Cox said to Mau.

Contemplating her nomination, Mau expressed, “I believe our struggle in the community has been about sharing stories that originate from within us genuinely, grounded in our shared humanity. This is fundamental to who we, as trans individuals, truly are – humans above all else.

Mau praised the fact that “Baby Reindeer” isn’t just a series featuring a trans character, but is “an outstanding show” in general. He considers it significant to celebrate that yes, it’s an LGBTQ series; it includes a trans character, and it’s not only that – it’s an excellent show, something he takes pride in. Ultimately, he hopes that more representation of trans individuals on screen continues to grow and evolve.

As a dedicated admirer, I’d like to highlight that Mau delved into trans experiences on screen with the 2020 film, “Disclosure: Trans Lives Onscreen.” Remarkably, I was part of this production, contributing my deep-rooted understanding of trans history to the project.

Mau expressed that working on the film transformed his life. It was his initial experience on a set of such magnitude, and he was amazed to witness trans individuals in leadership roles. He had the opportunity to observe you [Cox] exuding grace and power, which inspired him to aspire for dreams beyond what he had previously imagined for himself.

When Cox bid farewell to Mau, she commended the actress, “You’re breaking new ground and we couldn’t be prouder.” (or simply “You’re making history and we’re incredibly proud.”)

This coming Sunday’s broadcast is seeing “Shogun” as the frontrunner with an impressive 25 nominations across various categories, such as best drama series. Notably, it set several records during this process. Meanwhile, Netflix’s production “Baby Reindeer” garnered a total of 11 nominations, including outstanding limited series/anthology. Richard Gadd received a nod for lead actor, while Tom Goodman-Hill and supporting actors Mau and Jessica Gunning were also recognized with their respective nominations.

The show has been awarded for its exceptional casting in the category of limited or anthology series, as well as for its impressive picture editing.

The Emmys is airing live from L.A.’s Peacock Theater on ABC. Eugene and Dan Levy are hosting.
