Naver Webtoon Joins MPA’s Anti-Piracy Coalition ACE (Exclusive)

The organization against piracy run by the Motion Picture Association, known as the Alliance for Creativity and Entertainment (ACE), has added the popular webcomic platform Naver Webtoon to its membership. This expansion signifies a substantial growth into an intellectual property creation sector that has gained significant global importance in recent times.

To date, Naver Webtoon is the sole webcomic and webnovel company to become a member of ACE, also marking it as the first Korean-origin company to align with the organization’s vision. This company belongs to Nasdaq-listed Webtoon Entertainment, a significant player in popularizing webcomics worldwide, particularly in Asia, giving birth to a new wave of renowned comic creators. The content produced by this company has also emerged as a critical source of intellectual property for the global industry, with its two studios – Wattpad Webtoon Studios in the U.S. and Studio N in Korea – contributing to numerous successful story concepts that have been adapted by international streaming platforms like Netflix, Disney+, Crunchyroll, and many more local productions. Some of these adaptations include Netflix’s “All of Us Are Dead,” “Hellbound,” and “Sweet Home”; Disney+’s “Connect” and “Vigilante”; Crunchyroll’s “Tower of God” and “The God of High School”; and numerous others.

Junkoo Kim, founder and CEO of Webtoon Entertainment, stated that webcomics have revolutionized entertainment and fandom globally by giving storytellers the ability to express themselves. As a pioneer in webcomics who has joined ACE, we are honored to uphold creators’ rights and increase understanding worldwide about the gravity of unauthorized distribution. Collaborating with ACE and industry peers, we eagerly anticipate exploring opportunities for collective action and working hand-in-hand to combat illegal content dissemination.

Originating in 2017 as a collaborative effort by the MPA and numerous global media and tech firms to tackle internet piracy, ACE (Alliance for Creativity and Entertainment) now boasts over 50 members. These include all the significant Hollywood studios, along with content providers from Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and Latin America.

Incorporating Naver Webtoon into ACE’s alliance reinforces our growth in the Asia Pacific region and globally, as well as our commitment to safeguarding intellectual property in all its forms,” said Charles Rivkin, MPA chairman and CEO, also serving as ACE chairman. “Our coalition is constantly seeking new opportunities in strategic markets, such as Korea and California, to collaborate with local law enforcement and fortify our efforts to identify, prevent, and dismantle piracy networks that pilfer content, jeopardize consumers, and undermine the creative economy.
