Ryan Dorsey, Naya Rivera’s former partner, has been discussing the last moments of the late “Glee” star before her passing in 2020.
After Rivera’s passing, the actor shared his feelings about their son Josey, now 9 years old, still carrying guilt because he couldn’t prevent the actress from drowning while they were swimming together at Lake Piru, California. He spoke candidly about this in an exclusive interview with People magazine, which is the first time he has spoken publicly since her death.
Dorsey stated that he repeatedly heard him saying he was searching for a life raft, but there was a rope nearby with a big spider on it, making him too frightened to grab it. I keep telling him, ‘Friend, the rope wouldn’t have reached far enough.’
Additionally, Josey expressed concerns about the windy conditions potentially making it risky to enter the water. However, Rivera reassured him, saying, “Don’t overthink it!
When Rivera saw that the boat was drifting since it didn’t have an anchor or buoyancy equipment, it being the case that a wrongful death lawsuit filed by Josey against Ventura County had been settled in 2022, she told her son to swim back to the boat.
As a devoted admirer recalling the account shared by Dorsey, I remember that when I was just nine years old, I managed to swim back to where the tanks were and somehow navigated myself around the vessel. Unfortunately, it appears that in her efforts to bring me back onto the boat, Rivera had exhausted herself, leading to a tragic outcome – she drowned.
Dorsey stated, “He mentioned that the final words she uttered were his name, after which she vanished, and he no longer spotted her. The thought that he was compelled to observe her final moments is deeply disturbing to me.
At the tender age of 33, Rivera, famously known for portraying Santana Lopez in the Fox musical show “Glee”, was tragically pronounced deceased, following the discovery of her body after a span of five days.
On July 8, 2020, the deceased individual had taken a rental boat out with her son for a trip. Unfortunately, they failed to return the boat on time, prompting employees at the rental stand to search for them. It was during this search that they discovered her son, unaccompanied in the boat. Subsequently, authorities began a search operation, led by divers, who suspected she might have drowned in a tragic accident.
According to reports, Rivera’s son was fine. It is said that he informed investigators that he and his mother were swimming in the lake. He managed to get back into the boat, but unfortunately, his mother didn’t.
Dorsey shared that he found out about Rivera’s disappearance while in Ralph’s supermarket, Big Bear Lake, California, following a call from Rivera’s relatives. “I crumpled against a stack of beverages,” Dorsey stated. “I was gripped by dread.”

Dorsey admitted that he got the news about Rivera being missing while shopping at Ralph’s supermarket in Big Bear Lake, California, after hearing from Rivera’s family. “I slumped against a row of drinks,” Dorsey declared. “I was overwhelmed with worry.
Besides this, he mentioned that during his journey to Lake Piru, he drove above the usual speed, keeping his hazard lights on the entire time, chain-smoked cigarettes (which isn’t typically something he does), and cried throughout.
He mentioned that his destination was Josey. Losing both Naya and Josey would’ve left him uncertain about how to carry on with his life. He can’t say for certain what he would’ve done instead, but he’s confident it wouldn’t have been a positive outcome.
A few days prior to her passing, Rivera shared on social media a picture of herself and Josey with the caption, “We’re all by ourselves.
