In the 2025 TV lineup, NBC introduced their new Sunday night programming block, commencing with the docuseries “Americas” followed by two fresh scripted series, “Suits LA” and “Grosse Pointe Garden Society.” While both shows are innovative for primetime this year, they don’t seem like a natural pair. The legal drama “Suits LA,” led by Stephen Amell, began with a surprising twist, garnering enthusiastic responses from viewers, in contrast to “Grosse Pointe Garden Society” which delved headfirst into the dark comedy of its central murder mystery right away. Given that they appear to be an unusual combination, I reached out to Casey Kyber, executive producer of “GPGS,” for her thoughts on their placement together.
I had a chat with Casey Kyber on the red carpet at SCAD TVfest in Atlanta back in early February. At that time, there were still a couple of weeks before the premiere of Grosse Pointe Garden Society on NBC and Peacock. With NBC heavily promoting Suits LA, even playing the original theme song “Greenback Boogie” during commercial breaks in prime time, Kyber discussed her thoughts on GPGS and how it secured a spot for scripted shows airing on Sunday nights:
We truly cherish being a part of NBC. They made us feel incredibly valued. We’re thrilled as trailers and billboards begin to appear, and being involved in a new era of television that NBC appears genuinely enthusiastic about. Fingers crossed! There’s something unique about broadcast television, and for our traditional broadcast soap, moving back to the Sunday time slot where many iconic shows have aired previously feels quite significant. Plus, it’s fortunate that they’ll also air on Peacock, giving us the best of both streaming and traditional TV worlds.
For someone who enjoys NBC’s lineup of related shows such as “Chicago Fire,” “Chicago P.D.,” and “Chicago Med” on Wednesdays, along with crime dramas like “Law & Order,” “Law & Order: SVU,” and “Found” on Thursdays (with “Law & Order: Organized Crime” taking over from “Found”), the spinoff of “Suits” and “GPGS” don’t quite fit together as coherently, but that’s not necessarily a problem. Having some diversity in programming on Sunday nights can be enjoyable, and “The Americas” doesn’t align with either of them either!
1) I’m quite fond of the Grosse Pointe Garden Society, especially its stellar cast. The recent murder mystery series that’s become my Sunday night must-watch is something I’ve been eager to explore. Given that fans of Suits might be intrigued by this LA spinoff, and a Tom Hanks-narrated docuseries promises to be engaging, it’s understandable why one would be curious. But what really piques my interest is a murder mystery reminiscent of a typical broadcast soap, blending aspects of shows like Good Girls, How to Get Away with Murder, and Desperate Housewives.
I personally enjoyed the opening episode, and I’m eager to see the ratings once they are released for both GPGS and Suits LA. The murder mystery presents well-known actors in entirely new roles. Aja Naomi King portrays a character far removed from Harriet in Lessons in Chemistry as the complex Catherine, while Melissa Fumero’s Amy from Brooklyn Nine-Nine is unlike her Birdie persona from the premiere… at least, that seems to be the case before she transforms into Five-Drink Amy.
On Sunday evenings, NBC has rolled out an exciting new lineup that I’ve been eagerly anticipating. Starting at 8 p.m. Eastern Time, you can dive into ‘The Americas’, followed by ‘Suits LA’ at 9 p.m. ET and wrapping up with ‘Grosse Pointe Garden Society’ at 10 p.m. ET. If, like me, you happened to miss the premieres, don’t worry – all three shows are now available for streaming on Peacock!
