As a lifelong sports enthusiast and a devoted fan of NBCUniversal, I can confidently say that their Olympics coverage is nothing short of spectacular! The Paris games have catapulted them from third to first place among TV distributors, a feat that deserves a standing ovation. It’s not every day that we witness such a significant leap in the competitive world of television distribution.
Chalk up one last medal for NBCUniversal‘s Olympics coverage.
The Paris Games significantly boosted NBCU’s position, moving them from third to first among television providers in August, as indicated by Nielsen. During the measurement period from July 29 to Aug. 25, the company accounted for 13.4% of all TV consumption in the U.S., marking a substantial increase of 41% compared to their ranking in July among media distributors.
Viewing figures significantly increased across NBCUniversal channels in August, as opposed to July. Notably, the NBC broadcast network experienced a surge of 62%, USA Network saw a rise of 47%, and Peacock, which established a new record for usage, increased by 39%. Additionally, the Democratic National Convention on Aug. 19-22 contributed to a 43% increase in MSNBC’s viewership compared to July numbers.
In August, NBCUniversal had the largest percentage (13.4%) of TV viewing time among all measured networks according to the Media Distributor Gauge by Nielsen. This gauge, which started collecting data in November 2023 and was made publicly available in April, goes back as far as those dates.
In July, YouTube held the top spot among distributors, accounting for 10.6% of U.S. television usage. However, this percentage slightly decreased from its July figure of 10.4%. Despite this minor drop, it wasn’t enough to prevent NBCU from making substantial progress and overtaking YouTube into first place. Disney came in third with a share of 9.5%, while Netflix and Paramount followed closely behind with 7.9% and 7.1% respectively, securing the remaining spots in the top five.
In August, The Roku Channel, which currently represents 1.7% of total television usage, experienced a monthly increase from 1.6% in July. On the other hand, most major competitors saw a decrease. For the fourth consecutive month with available data, the top 14 distributors collectively accounted for roughly 75% of all TV viewing in the United States. Here’s the ranking for August:
