NCIS’ Katrina Law Told Us The Story Behind How She Learned Jessica Knight Would Be Back For Season 22, And It Led To Her Having Fun Over Fan Reactions

As a dedicated fan of NCIS for the past decade or so, I’ve seen my fair share of twists and turns that have left me on the edge of my seat. But the latest development with Jessica Knight (played by the talented Katrina Law) has got to be one of the most intriguing yet!

In the final episode of NCIS Season 21, Katrina Law’s character Jessica Knight agreed to take on the role of Camp Pendleton’s new REACT (Regional Enforcement Action Capabilities Team) Chief Training Officer as offered by Director Leon Vance. Given that this job necessitated a cross-country move, viewers were left guessing whether this might mean Law would be departing from the beloved CBS series. However, it turned out that Law continues to be a regular cast member in NCIS Season 22, which is set to air soon on the 2024 TV schedule. In an interview with TopMob, Law discussed the moment she discovered Knight would stay on, and how it fueled her amusement over fan speculation about her departure from the show.

I began my latest chat with Katrina Law, who’s also known for shows like “Spartacus: Vengeance” and “Arrow”, by enquiring about her initial response when she found out that Jessica Knight would be assuming the REACT role. This was quite a significant change in the status quo for “NCIS”, as she explained.

Around two to three weeks prior to filming the final episode, I had an inkling that my character was set to accept the job offer. It didn’t take long for me to realize I’d be returning to the series, though there was always a hint of suspicion – like, ‘Are you pulling a fast one on me?’ However, as soon as they handed me the script, they confirmed it: ‘By the way, you’re in this one.’ So, there were no surprises for me. I’m the type who enjoys fan excitement, so when I read the ending and saw my character taking the job, I thought, ‘This is going to create a fantastic reaction!’ It’s been entertaining all summer watching fans discuss my departure online – some positive, some negative, and some even suggesting recasts for my character. So there’s quite a spectrum of reactions out there.

After receiving the script for “Reef Madness”, Katrina Law was promptly informed by the writers that she wouldn’t need to search for a new TV role, as her character, Jessica Knight, would remain part of the main cast. Unfortunately, viewers had to wait several months to learn about this continuity, leaving them uncertain about whether or not Jessica Knight would depart permanently from the series. While it’s common for significant cast exits in popular shows like NCIS to be announced ahead of time, it’s also true that the show hasn’t always given prior notice when letting go of a regular character.

In an amusing turn of events, NCIS actor Rocky Carroll recounts a hilarious prank played by his colleague Mark Harmon during one of their earliest scenes together on the CBS series.

“Pauley Perrette shares how a crude joke significantly influenced the development of Abby Sciuto.” This version maintains the original meaning while using more straightforward and easy-to-understand language.

Despite speculation among NCIS fans about Jessica Knight potentially leaving the show, Katrina Law found amusement in the online reactions she encountered. Some of these responses weren’t particularly kind, but it was entertaining for her to see the candies people suggested as potential replacements for playing Knight. However, it eventually became clear that Law would be staying with the series. This doesn’t necessarily mean that Knight will immediately rejoin the team when NCIS Season 22 premieres; instead, all her REACT work seems to have been done off-screen.

Indeed, Knight’s departure set off a series of significant happenings for Season 22. For instance, Nick Torres resumed his undercover work, Timothy McGee sought a higher position, and Alden Parker found himself without immediate family at home. A storyline will feature Parker journeying to California, where he’ll reconnect with Knight. As the season progresses, Knight and Jimmy Palmer will have more discussions about their relationship status. Although we don’t yet know how Knight will return to the team, you can expect her to be a recurring character throughout the season.

Next Monday at 8 pm Eastern Time, the Season 22 premiere of NCIS airs, followed straightaway by a two-hour debut of the prequel series, NCIS: Origins. Both shows, along with all other titles in this crime drama franchise, can be accessed through a Paramount+ subscription.
