NCIS: LA Has Ended, But Eric Christian Olsen Has A Brand New CBS Gig–And It’s Not A Franchise Spinoff

As a long-time fan and avid gamer of the NCIS universe, I’ve been thrilled to see some of my favorite cast members continuing their involvement in the franchise even after the end of NCIS: Los Angeles. LL Cool J graced our screens on NCIS: Hawai’i before its unfortunate cancellation, Daniela Ruah directed episodes for both the Mothership and Hawaii spinoffs, and now Eric Christian Olsen has joined CBS as an executive producer for the upcoming Matlock reboot.

After the finale of NCIS: Los Angeles, some of us actors found ways to remain within the NCIS world. I, LL Cool J, joined the cast of NCIS: Hawai’i before its unfortunate cancellation after three seasons. Daniela Ruah, on the other hand, took charge of directing episodes for both the main NCIS show and Hawai’i. Eric Christian Olsen, however, landed a new gig at CBS, but it’s not part of the NCIS franchise.

I, Marty Deeks from NCIS: Los Angeles, am thrilled to share some exciting news with you all as a fellow gaming enthusiast and TV lover. During a recent Television Critics Association press tour, I confirmed my role as an executive producer on the upcoming Matlock reboot. This new drama is set to make its debut in the 2024 TV schedule. Previously, I had the privilege of serving as an executive producer for Hulu’s series Woke. However, the anticipation and excitement I feel now, as I embark on this new project, are greater than ever!

For the past 13 years, I’ve been fortunate enough to be a part of the CBS team, and let me tell you, this journey has been nothing short of amazing. With each experience, I discovered stories that truly resonated with me, and I was thrilled to have the chance to develop them from their initial stages.

Olsen’s absence from the screen is softened by the news that he will continue his association with CBS. The network, which has been his home for the past ten years, seems eager to keep him. The upcoming reboot of “Matlock” led by Kathy Bates is an exciting prospect, and Olsen’s role as an executive producer adds to the anticipation.

If he hasn’t got any acting projects lined up on IMDb and won’t be appearing in any productions soon, there’s a chance he might join the cast of Matlock. However, it’s uncertain given that the show hasn’t been released yet. Eric Christian Olsen has mentioned his willingness to take on a role, but it won’t resemble Deeks.

Each time a despotic or cruel lawyer emerges, they turn to me and ask, “Eric, can you take a look at this?” Essentially, I’ve been portraying unsavory legal roles, and I believe there may be a chance for me to tackle a major antagonistic character down the line.

Olsen’s transition into a villain character could bring an exciting twist, given his long-running role as Deeks. The recurring requests for him to play a lawyer and now producing on a legal show seems like a predestined path. Furthermore, with this new “Matlock” project, he has the opportunity to focus on executive producing duties for the time being. However, he hasn’t ruled out making an appearance himself in the future. This double role is certainly intriguing.

Despite his expressed interest in rejoining the NCIS universe, it’s uncertain if Olsen could make time for a return engagement. He had expressed a desire to be part of NCIS: Sydney. Such a comeback would also allow fans to catch up on Densi’s developments post-baby announcement in the series finale.

It’s uncertain when or if that event will occur, but in the meantime, we’re looking forward to watching “Matlock” this fall and cheering on Eric Christian Olsen in his new role. Don’t miss the series premiere on Thursday, Oct. 17 at 9 p.m. ET on CBS. Let’s hope that Olsen will make an appearance as a sneaky lawyer character soon.
