As a dedicated fan of the NCIS franchise, I’m beyond excited about the upcoming prequel series, “NCIS: Origins,” and the opportunity to witness Austin Stowell bring a new dimension to the iconic character Leroy Jethro Gibbs. Mark Harmon’s wise words of advice to the young actor during his screen test – “trust yourself” – resonate deeply with me, as confidence is indeed essential for any actor stepping into such a significant role.
Having self-confidence is crucial when performing for a large audience on a weekly basis, as Mark Harmon, the executive producer and narrator of “NCIS: Origins,” advised Austin Stowell, who is set to take on the role of Leroy Jethro Gibbs. During his initial screen test, Harmon offered Stowell simple yet impactful advice: “Mark told me to ‘trust yourself,'” Stowell shared with USA Today during a Television Critics Association panel.
From my perspective as an avid fan, it seemed clear from the start that Stowell was the ideal candidate for the role. Harmon even shared that another executive producer was taken aback by Stowell’s presence during the screen test. Harmon jokingly commented that Lucita Monreal had swooned over him, but in truth, she did. After Stowell left the room, she exclaimed, “Now that guy is a star!” North, another co-executive producer, joined in on the joke, admitting he was the one who had been smitten. Stowell himself found amusement in their reactions and put an end to the debate by simply stating, “Somebody swooned.” It’s possible that part of this reaction was due to Stowll’s distinctly un-Gibbs-like haircut – a military-style close crop for the series.
With rapid heartbeats and fluttering eyelashes, it’s yet to be determined if the audience will detect the same radiance in Stowell as his producers have. However, a fresh piece of information emerged during the TCA panel about the specific timeline for “NCIS: Origins.”
Austin Stowell confirms the series takes place after Gibbs’ family is murdered
As someone who has closely followed the NCIS franchise for years, I’ve always been intrigued by Leroy Jethro Gibbs’ backstory and the mystery surrounding his family’s murder at Camp Pendleton. The question of whether the series takes place before or after these tragic events has fueled much speculation among fans.
Austin Stowell commented, “Gibbs as portrayed on screen is not the true version. This character is broken and seeking self-discovery.” The upcoming “NCIS: Origins” series might attract viewers as they witness Gibbs’ journey through the shadows of his past to uncover his essential identity. Given Gibbs’ extensive backstory, including multiple marriages and rising to become a top agent, it remains to be seen if fans are ready for this deep exploration of the character. The premiere date is set for October 14.
